The space radiation environment poses significant risks to both astronauts and spacecraft systems, as it consists of high-energy charged particles originating from galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), solar energetic particles (SEPs), and trapped particles in Earth’s magnetosphere. Accurate characterization of this environment is essential for assessing radiation hazards and developing effective protection strategies. The low-Earth orbit (LEO) is the primary region of human space activities, where the most satellite operations and crewed missions are conducted. However, radiation measurements in regions above the altitude of the International Space Station (ISS) are relatively limited. Meanwhile, the radiation environment in lunar orbit has been investigated through several missions, but direct measurements of the radiation environment on the lunar surface remain scarce and exhibit regional variations, highlighting the need for precise characterization considering actual exploration and habitation conditions.
This study focuses on the development, validation, and analysis of measurement results of compact Si-based particle detector systems for space radiation dosimetry and energy spectroscopy suitable for high-energy charged particles from GCRs and SEPs. The research includes detector design optimization, ground-based calibration of dose quantities using gamma rays, protons, and heavy ions, and in-orbit measurements and analysis in high-altitude LEO.
The Low-Earth Orbit Space Radiation Dosimeter (LEO-DOS) was launched aboard the Korea Next Generation Small Satellite-2 (NEXTSat-2) on May 25, 2023, by the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-III (KSLV-III). It provides real-time measurements of linear energy transfer (LET) and dose quantities using a Si-based particle dosimeter (Si-PD). Meanwhile, the Lunar Vehicle Radiation Dosimeter (LVRAD) was designed to characterize the radiation environment on the lunar surface and evaluate its biological effects, where the absence of Earth’s geomagnetic shielding results in direct exposure to GCRs and SEPs. The charged particle module of the LVRAD consists of a Si-PD and a Si-based particle spectrometer (Si-PS) and will be deployed on a commercial lunar lander to support future lunar missions through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.
The Si-PD included in both LEO-DOS and LVRAD consists of a silicon sensor surrounded by a 10 mm thick tissue-equivalent plastic (TEP) layer. This structure is designed to measure Hp(10), which is a dose quantity that provides a conservative estimate of the whole-body effective dose. The Si-PS in LVRAD is designed to measure the LET spectrum of charged particles while simultaneously measuring the proton energy spectrum in the energy range of 1-500 MeV, which is the dominant component of GCRs and SEPs. This configuration allows simultaneous evaluation of biological dose and energy distribution for precise characterization of diverse space radiation environments. The ground calibration experiments for the Si-PD and Si-PS showed good agreement between measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrated good linearity in energy and LET responses over broad energy and LET ranges. The Si-PD of the LEO-DOS has continuously measured the radiation environment at 550 km LEO for over one year after launch, providing a detailed characterization of the LEO radiation environment, including contributions from GCRs, SEPs, and trapped protons, and derived dosimetric quantities to assess their biological effects.
The outcomes of this research provide radiation environment and data on associated biological effects for high-altitude LEO and the lunar surface, which are key regions for future crewed space missions where measurements remain relatively limited, and provide a foundation for the design of lightweight, versatile radiation monitoring systems essential for future human and robotic exploration beyond LEO. These outcomes will further enhance the applicability of the developed detector systems to a wider range of exploration missions and strengthen the reliability of radiation risk assessment for both crewed and uncrewed space missions.
