Heat pipe cooled microreactor (HPMR) is being actively researched as compact, transportable power sources for remote, off-grid applications and space missions owing to its small size, ease of deployment, and enhanced safety features. Depending on the reactor concept, the HPMR core consists of a solid monolith made of metallic materials or graphite. However, high operation temperature, load following operation, and neutron irradiation leads to thermal expansion, high thermal stresses, and creep in the solid core. Because the structural integrity of the monolith structure is important for safety of the HPMR core, a multiphysics analysis tool that can capture neutronics–thermal–structural behavior is required during core design and safety assessment process.
In this study, a multiphysics analysis tool for HPMR core was developed, and the thermal-structural safety of HPMR cores was assessed. The framework couples the open-source CFD software OpenFOAM with the continuous-energy Monte Carlo neutron transport code PRAGMA and the one-dimensional heat pipe thermal analysis code ANLHTP, thereby enabling simultaneous treatment of reactivity feedback due to thermal expansion and heat pipe performance. The existing thermal-structural solver in OpenFOAM was extended for HPMR applications by improving its thermal–mechanical capabilities and implementing additional structural models, such as creep and neutron irradiation effects in graphite.
Verification and validation calculations were conducted to assess the developed multiphysics analysis tool. First, verification studies were performed to evaluate the thermal-structural analysis capability of the improved OpenFOAM solver and the newly implemented creep model, and the results showed good agreement with analytic solutions and ANSYS simulation results. Verification calculations were also carried out for the C++ reimplementation of ANLHTP, confirming that ANLHTP accurately predicts heat pipe performance for steady-state sodium heat pipe experiments. Finally, KRUSTY reactor simulations were performed to validate the multiphysics capability of the coupled code. Multiphysics simulations were performed both for the normal operation state and a single heat pipe failure scenario. The resulting power and temperature distributions were compared with the experimental data and simulation results from reference. For normal operation state, the calculated power and temperature distributions agreed well with the reference results, and the subsequent structural analysis based on the computed temperature field showed constraint-dependent increases in stress, indicating that the OpenFOAM structural solver captures the underlying physical response in a consistent manner. Similarly, for the single heat pipe failure scenario, the predicted power and temperature distributions were in good agreement with the reference results, and the structural response exhibited no pronounced differences from the normal operation state because the associated temperature increase was relatively small.
Multiphysics analyses were then performed for several representative heat pipe–cooled microreactor cores. Prior to fast spectrum core simulations, ASME BPVC Section III, Division 5 was reviewed to establish thermal-structural safety criteria for metallic monoliths commonly used in fast reactors. This review identified the applicable temperature limits for metallic monolith structures and confirmed that, because thermal stress is the dominant load in heat pipe–cooled microreactor cores, strain limits should be used as the primary acceptance criteria. It was further confirmed that structural integrity can be evaluated using the A-1 and A-3 procedures applicable to elastic analyses. Based on these criteria, a multiphysics analysis of the MegaPower reactor, a fast spectrum reactor design employing an SS316 monolith, was conducted. The results demonstrated that the developed tool can simulate a MegaPower full-core model containing thousands of heat pipes within a short computational time. However, excessively high stresses were observed in the monolith, and the dominant cause was identified as large temperature gradients within the structure. Therefore, a parametric study was performed to mitigate the stress by adjusting the heat pipe sink temperature distribution, and the results showed that the monolith stress can be significantly reduced. Nevertheless, even after stress reduction, the A-1 acceptance criterion for the metallic core was not satisfied. When long term operation was considered through creep analysis, additional stress relief was observed; however, the results still failed to meet the A-3 criterion.
Before analyzing a thermal spectrum core, the structural safety criteria for graphite monoliths were similarly examined using ASME BPVC Section III, Division 5. For graphite monoliths, it was confirmed that structural safety can be evaluated using a probabilistic approach based on the maximum allowable stress determined from operating conditions and material specimen tests, and the neutron irradiation effects that must be additionally considered were identified. Using these criteria, a multiphysics analysis was performed for the rHPMR design, a thermal spectrum reactor employing a graphite monolith. The results indicated that the temperature limit of TRISO fuel and the stress limit of graphite were exceeded, and that inclusion of neutron irradiation led to a substantial additional increase in stress due to irradiation-induced shrinkage and property changes. A parametric study was again conducted to satisfy the acceptance criteria by reducing the overall core temperature, and the results showed that the TRISO fuel temperature limit could be met. However, the stress level in the graphite monolith did not decrease significantly. In addition, the influence of core volume change—not implemented in this work—was assessed by comparing density-based feedback with a mesh deformation approach, confirming that the two treatments lead to measurable differences in the coupled analysis results.
Overall, the OpenFOAM-based multiphysics analysis tool developed in this study was demonstrated to be capable of performing coupled simulations and structural safety evaluations for a range of heat pipe–cooled microreactor core concepts. The framework is expected to provide substantial support for HPMR core multiphysics and structural analyses, an area where previous studies have been relatively limited. Furthermore, the elastic-analysis-based safety assessment procedure adopted in this study requires relatively simple input data and yields conservative results, making it well suited for rapidly screening out designs and operating conditions that do not satisfy structural acceptance criteria during the early design phase and in regulatory reviews.
