Accurate and frequent bathymetry surveys are essential for understanding coastal processes, yet conventional echosounding methods remain expensive for extensive monitoring. To advance the characterization of coastal morphology, this study develops an adaptive kinematic depth inversion algorithm for nearshore bathymetry mapping using UAV imagery. The principle of kinematic depth inversion is to capture the spatiotemporal characteristics of free surface waves from a wave field video, followed by the estimation of local water depth based on the linear dispersion relation. The proposed method in this dissertation improves existing depth inversion techniques by addressing key sources of error, including effects of dominant mode extraction techniques, spatial windowing for interrogation and wave nonlinearity.
First, a baseline framework was developed and validated from scratch to ensure full control for subsequent improvement. The proposed preprocessing pipeline minimizes hardware-induced errors, e.g., lens distortion, perspective distortion, and unstable camerawork, thereby enabling reliable video-derived wave analysis. For dominant wave component extraction, the performances of applicable decomposition methods were compared, and the dynamic mode decomposition was adopted due to its unbiased frequency detection. For wavenumber estimation from each extracted wave mode, an approach that combines the Fast Fourier transform with the Radon transform was employed, which is relatively accurate and computationally efficient. In addition, because local wavenumber measurements are sensitive to spatial windowing, an auto-tuning method was embedded to adaptively select window size based on wavelength, wave direction, and bottom slope. Using determined finite sets of frequency–wavenumber pairs, the local depth is then estimated using the linear dispersion relation. However, in nonlinear wave environments, the linear assumption can overestimate depth by more than a factor of two; accordingly, we developed and validated a correcting method for wave nonlinearity, which reduced errors by up to 39.3\% in shallow regions. In conclusion, this dissertation presents an adaptive, accurate, and physically consistent kinematic depth inversion algorithm for efficient nearshore bathymetry mapping.
