This dissertation develops two complementary pressure- sensitive adhesive (PSA) strategies that enable sustainable disassembly and end of life management of high value products, with a particular focus on electronic devices and electric vehicle battery assemblies. As modern technologies increasingly rely on compact, multilayered architectures, adhesives play a critical role in joining dissimilar materials while providing mechanical integrity, optical clarity, and environmental protection. However, the same durability required during service creates major challenges for repair, reuse, and recycling. Mechanical separation of bonded interfaces often results in substrate damage, residue formation, and contamination of recycling streams. Addressing this challenge requires adhesive systems that maintain high reliability in use but can be deliberately deactivated or transformed at end of life.
The first strategy explored in this work is an electrically debondable pressure sensitive adhesive (EDA) based on conventional acrylic PSA matrices containing low concentrations of imidazolium-based electrolytes. The objective is to achieve strong initial adhesion while enabling rapid, voltage triggered adhesion loss under moderate direct current bias. Through systematic variation of monomer composition and electrolyte identity, the developed EDA exhibits peel strengths exceeding 10 N/cm in the bonded state and undergo pronounced adhesion reduction within seconds upon electrical activation. A central mechanistic insight is that debonding behavior is governed by localized interfacial electrochemical reactions and electrode selective ion accumulation, rather than by bulk ionic conductivity alone. The feasibility of this approach is validated on aluminum assemblies representative of prismatic battery cell housings, where electrically triggered separation enables clean release under load bearing conditions.
The second strategy addresses the long-term persistence of acrylic adhesives by introducing a degradable PSA platform based on vinylcyclopropane (VCP) chemistry. Radical ring opening polymerization of VCP monomers installs cleavable unsaturated bonds along the polymer backbone, while VCP derived crosslinkers extend these motifs to network junctions. This design enables controlled fragmentation of both linear chains and crosslinked networks into low molecular weight products through ozonolysis. Importantly, the adhesives are engineered to retain PSA grade viscoelasticity and adhesion during service. Their stability under thermal, photochemical, and chemical exposures relevant to practical applications confirms that degradation can be reserved for designated end of life conditions.
By applying the developed strategies to PSA, this study establishes a sustainability-oriented pathway that enables successful electronic device disassembly and degradation of PSA materials. The results broaden the scope of stimuli responsive PSA design by demonstrating that diverse external triggers can be leveraged to induce debonding or degradation. By enabling damage mitigated separation, and improving compatibility with recycling and reuse workflows, this work advances sustainable materials solutions for next generation electronics.
