Modern airborne and spaceborne platforms increasingly rely on high-performance optical systems for missions, but the light beam is distorted during the propagation through surrounding flow fields. This aero-optic aberration can cause a loss of spatial resolution, time-varying boresight error, and energy loss. Up to now, however, no research has been reported on practical operation of interceptors at high altitudes, especially with practical geometry and situation where the vehicle is under control.
This dissertation aims a computational investigation of aero-optic aberrations that arise when multiple lateral jets are used to control a supersonic interceptor. Flow simulations are conducted using robust and accurate in-house flow solver ACTFlow, and optical path difference (OPD) is calculated from the numerical density field via in-house codes developed in this thesis.
Validation and verification of the aero-optic in-house solver are conducted for spherically symmetric lens and supersonic flow over a two-dimensional wedge. Developed OPD calculation framework maintains second-order spatial accuracy and can obtain convergent solutions for smooth refractive index fields. Cross-validation with experiments confirms that steady flow features are accurately resolved, while highly unsteady inflow fluctuations could not be accounted even though additional modelings of boundary layers and Mach waves are combined.
Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are employed to examine the basic flow structure and to fast screen the effects of various parameters including altitudes ranging from 30 to 50km, angles of attack from -15° to 25°, and with four distinct jet configurations. Aero-optic effects of flow structure are analyzed by calculating the optical path difference (OPD) as a function of beam arclength parameter and by normalizing it through scale analysis.
When the jet flow does not interfere the seeker's field of view (FOV), normalized OPD is predominantly governed by the bow shock and conical expansion region generated in front of the vehicle head and exhibits similar profiles along the beam path for all altitudes. When the jet flow is introduced, separation shock and bubble induced by jet interaction interferes the seeker's FOV under altitudes over 35km and AOA over 15°. Multi-jet cases at 35km show that the separation bubble blocks a larger portion of the seeker's FOV and increases normalized OPD at higher AOA as per-jet strength increases. Through delayed detached eddy simulations at the extreme case, the effect of unsteadiness is measured about 20% larger normalized OPD than the steady-state counterpart.
This study is the first to address aero-optic behavior of a three-dimensional high-speed interceptor under control. In-depth relationships between OPD and flow structures are confirmed by examining the evolution of normalized OPD. Notably, the aero-optic effects caused by the jet-induced separation bubble and shock observed at high angles of attack are reported for the first time.
