This study explores compensatory behaviors associated with the consumption of vice and virtue food and examines how to moderate compensatory food choices. Essay 1 investigates four types of compensatory behaviors using food diary data collected from 14,036 South Koreans between March 2019 and November 2022. The findings indicate that prior consumption of vice food causes the subsequent consumption of virtue food and the avoidance of vice food. Similarly, prior consumption of virtue food results in the avoidance of virtue food in subsequent episode. Based on social facilitation theory, the study finds that eating with other people enhances compensatory avoidance behaviors. These findings provide quantitative evidence for compensatory eating using large-scale, real-world data and demonstrate the moderating effect of social eating.
Essay 2 extends these findings by positioning mukbang as a form of virtual commensality that influences compensatory food choices. Based on arousal theory and the framework of embodied simulation, Essay 2 hypothesizes that if virtual food cues exceed a certain sensory threshold, vicarious satisfaction through mukbang watching can occur. The experimental results demonstrate that, while exposure to low-intensity mukbang fails to induce significant behavioral changes, high-intensity mukbang significantly increases the likelihood of selecting virtue food over vice food. These findings suggest that, in virtual settings, intense sensory simulations can serve as a compensatory mechanism that satisfies the desire for indulgence.
In conclusion, this paper describes two distinct pathways to maintain healthy eating through commensality. While physical commensality can promote consistent virtue choice through external social regulation (Essay 1), virtual commensality (mukbang) can provide vicarious satisfaction through internal sensory simulation (Essay 2). Therefore, both physical and virtual companionships offer strategies for dietary self-regulation.
