Driven by the global climate crisis and the need to develop zero-emission vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as promising and innovative technologies. Electric AWD vehicles actively exploit the traction of all four wheels, offering superior drivability and higher performance limits under diverse road conditions. However, compared with equivalent two-wheel-drive configurations, they often suffer from reduced energy efficiency due to increased system weight and drivetrain losses. The energy-optimal control of electric AWD vehicles is therefore a technically challenging and practically important research problem.

This study originates from the practical need to develop an optimal torque distribution strategy between the front and rear motors to extend the all-electric range of AWD EVs. To address this challenge, it proposes sub-optimal control methods based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP) and Reinforcement Learning (RL), and evaluates their performance of optimality and real-time capability for large-scale systems.

To this end, this study proposes a new near-optimal control approach based on PMP, referred to as the Short-term Costate Estimation of PMP (SCEMP). SCEMP repeatedly performs forward integration of the state equation and backward integration of the costate equation over a short prediction horizon to obtain near-optimal control inputs. In addition, a RL framework is developed, which employs augmented state variables with reference features and a lightweight inference model. The proposed optimal control methods are evaluated through driving simulations using a vehicle dynamics model that incorporates feedforward torque-tracking logic under various speed profiles, and their real-time inference capability is validated through edge-device experiments.

Under straight-line driving simulations on a flat road following prescribed velocity profiles, SCEMP and RL achieved near-optimal performance within 1\% of the global optimum obtained by dynamic programming (DP). Furthermore, this near-optimality was found to originate not from the situation-dependent decision logic of DP, but from the one-to-one functional relationship between state and action. SCEMP reduced computation time by more than 170 times compared with DP, while the RL method, employing a knowledge-distilled and quantized lightweight model, achieved inference latency below 10 ms.

The primary contribution of this study lies in the proposal of the SCEMP algorithm, which reinterprets the PMP from a predictive control perspective. SCEMP reconstructs a given event as a set of sub-problems defined over temporal windows, thereby effectively mitigating the numerical instability arising in the costate dynamics and enabling the forward execution of optimal control. These characteristics suggest that SCEMP can serve as a foundational framework for real-time optimal control in infinite-horizon problems, such as real driving conditions, and are expected to contribute substantially to the development of intelligent vehicles.
