Brokerage Positions, Role Differences, and Creative Performance in Innovation Networks = 혁신 네트워크에서의 중개 위치와 창의적 성과: 역할 유형의 조절 효과

국문 초록 (Abstract)

혁신과 창의성에 기술적 역량이 중요해짐에 따라, 이 논문은 아이디어 생성에 집중하는 ‘아이디어 기반 역할’과 이를 기술적으로 구현하는 작업에 집중하는 ‘기술 기반 역할’을 나누고 이들의 네트워크 중개 위치와 창의적 성과의 차이를 규명한다. 우선 기술 기반 역할은 아이디어 기반 역할에 비해 제약이 없고 더 광범위하게 적용될 수 있는 기술에 집중하기에 네트워크 중개 위치를 더 많이 차지하기 마련이다. 하지만 중개 위치에서 오는 새로운 정보는 아이디어 생성 작업에 도움을 주기에 아이디어 기반 역할이 중개 위치를 차지했을 때 창의적 성과가 더욱 증진된다. 위 가설들을 ‘게임 잼’이라는 게임 개발 대회에서의 협업과 성과 데이터로 증명한다. 이 연구는 기술 중심의 혁신과 창의적 사업에서 역할 유형에 따라 중개 위치 차지와 그에 따른 창의적 성과가 결정될 수 있다는 점을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As technology is becoming an integral aspect of innovation and creative work, I investigate the difference in network structure and creative performance between Idea-based roles who focus on creating novel ideas, and Tech-based roles who focus on technical implementation tasks. I argue that Tech-based roles are more likely to occupy brokerage positions than Idea-based roles, as they focus on technical skills that are more generally applicable across projects than ideas with specific identities. However, Idea-based roles benefit more in their performance from occupying brokerage positions, as non-redundant information enhances their idea creation tasks. I find support for my hypotheses with collaboration and performance data of 5 years in Game Jams, which are short-term competitions where developers collaborate to build a game of a given theme. This study contributes to the network literature by suggesting that role differences could systematically shape brokerage positions and their benefits, particularly in technology-driven environments.
