This thesis investigates how middle-class African women in South Korea create notions of "Koreanness" and "Africanness" in their pursuit of belonging and as responses to gendered racism. Using participant observation and anthropological interviews, this thesis argues that Black African women develop and negotiate imagined ideas of "Africanness" and "Koreanness" across different spaces—public and private—within Korea.
Negative constructions of "Koreanness" emerge from experiences of gendered racism in public spaces and social distancing by Koreans in private spheres and friendships. Characteristics of "Koreanness" are imagined as reserved and antisocial ("no community"). In contrast, they construct "Africanness" as its antithesis: expressive and sociable. Underlying these constructions of "cultural difference" is the gendered racism and anti-Black prejudice of Korean society, where Black African women are scrutinized and pressured to filter out their "Africanness" in self-presentations within Korean public spaces.
Black African women's construction of "Africanness" and its counterpart "Koreanness" constitutes a case of strategic essentialism, functioning as a coping strategy for managing gendered racism and social exclusion in Korea. "Africanness" becomes an embodied form of belonging through sonic practices carried out in Korean urban space of Afrobeats bars in Seoul. Afrobeats—as sound and as a medium channeling "Africanness" as expressive—reconfigures space, sociality, and belonging in ways previously unavailable in Korean urban settings. In Afrobeats bars, Black African women negotiate and perform what they imagine to be "Africanness," creating an alternative sociality that simultaneously unsettles the dichotomy between Koreans and Africans.
