Long-span bridges are inherently vulnerable to vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) due to their structural flexibility and low damping characteristics. While large-amplitude VIV is widely recognized as a serviceability concern, recent observations indicate that even low-amplitude VIV can induce secondary resonant responses and adversely affect the long-term structural stability and durability of bridge components. Although structural health monitoring (SHM) systems provide continuous vibration data, low-amplitude VIV is often masked by traffic-induced and buffeting responses, making reliable detection particularly challenging. Moreover, conventional signal processing and supervised learning approaches are limited in detecting such subtle vibrations due to predefined thresholds and the requirement for labeled datasets.
This study proposes an unsupervised deep learning framework for automatic detection of low-amplitude VIV using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)–based Variational Autoencoder–Generative Adversarial Network (VAE-GAN). The model is trained exclusively on normal (non-VIV) acceleration data and identifies abnormal vibration events using an anomaly score that combines reconstruction error and adversarial discrimination output.
The proposed framework was validated using long-term SHM data from the Cheonsa Bridge, a long-span cable-stayed bridge in South Korea. The results show that the framework successfully detects not only first-mode large-amplitude VIV but also low-amplitude higher-mode VIV that is difficult to identify using existing methods. In addition, the proposed framework identified previously unreported resonant vibration responses, including higher-mode low-amplitude VIV and deck abnormalities induced by cable vortex-induced vibrations, and the temporal variation of the anomaly score provided insight into different vibration phases. These findings demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach for reliable and generalizable detection of subtle VIV, supporting data-driven maintenance of long-span bridges.
