Tubular SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites and multi-layered SiC-based materials are considered promising long-term fuel cladding candidates for overcoming the limitations of traditional zirconium-based alloys, particularly under accident conditions. However, challenges associated with their statistical mechanical behavior, limited pseudo-ductility, and inherent brittleness have hindered further progress toward an optimized cladding design. This study assessed the pseudo-ductility of SiC-based cladding in comparison to the allowable embrittlement limit established for steam-oxidized zirconium-based alloy claddings.
Motivated to observe comparative mechanical behaviors under accident-relevant conditions, Ring Compression Tests (RCTs) were conducted on as-received triplex claddings (consisting of an inner monolith SiC layer, a middle SiCf/SiC composite layer, and an outer Environmental Barrier Coating <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><EBC>) at 135 ± 3 °C in compliance with the U.S. NRC protocols for Post-Quench Ductility (PQD) assessment. The pseudo-ductility of triplex SiC was then assessed through direct qualitative and quantitative comparisons with the residual ductility of steam-oxidized Zr-1.1Nb alloy cladding. Specimen lengths of 8 mm and 13 mm were selected for the comparative assessment: the 8 mm length conforms to the regulatory test requirements for zirconium-based alloy claddings, whereas the 13 mm length was chosen to examine how an increased gauge length influences toughness through the continuous fiber reinforced SiCf/SiC composite layer.
To ensure a consistent basis for comparison, some specimens of both materials were exposed to high-temperature steam under the same simulated Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) conditions. The triplex SiCs exhibited negligible mass changes during oxidation, regardless of exposure duration, whereas the Zr-1.1Nb alloy showed continuous mass gain. After oxidation and quenching, RCTs at 135 ± 3 °C revealed gradual stress drops in the triplex SiC, indicating sustained pseudo-ductile deformation and a capability to maintain coolable geometry. Steam oxidation caused only minor mechanical degradation in the SiC-based cladding, in sharp contrast to the pronounced loss of ductility observed in the zirconium-based alloy. However, the triplex SiC did exhibit a considerable reduction in pseudo-ductility after 3 hours of high-temperature steam exposure under simulated LOCA conditions.
To translate qualitative behaviors into measurable parameters, comparative ductility was quantified using strain values at maximum stress, as well as strain and toughness at 0.8 times the maximum stress (post-peak location). The results show that the pseudo-ductility of both the as-received and oxidized triplex SiC specimens is comparable to the residual ductility of severely oxidized Zr-1.1Nb alloy claddings. The highest pseudo-ductile response was observed for the 13 mm triplex SiC specimens, comparable in magnitude to the residual ductility of Zr-1.1Nb alloy oxidized to more than 20% CP-ECR, even though the regulatory oxidation limit required to maintain acceptable ductility is 17% CP-ECR. According to weakest-link considerations, the apparent brittleness of full-length cladding may become more pronounced than that observed in small-scale specimens. In triplex SiC cladding, this effect is further influenced by pronounced structural heterogeneity and complex interlayer interactions. Thus, the pseudo-ductility range demonstrated by triplex SiC corresponds to that of oxidized zirconium-based alloy claddings that are already regarded as structurally brittle for fuel-rod applications, despite differing underlying deformation mechanisms.
Further qualitative examination was performed to investigate the distinct failure behaviors of the materials. Unlike severely oxidized Zr-1.1Nb, in which cracks initiate and directly propagate to the entire thickness and length, accompanied by sudden stress drops (>30%), the triplex SiC exhibited nondeterministic crack initiation and multistage propagation mechanisms under RCT. Cracks initiated in the brittle monolith layers, including the inner monolith and EBC, and propagated to the entire length, accompanied by localized stress drops at early stages before the maximum stress-carrying capacity was reached. This implies that the structural deterioration of triplex SiC primarily comes from the presence of brittle constituents, ultimately compromising gas tightness. Once the maximum stress was attained, localized stress drops were observed, caused by the extended propagation of radial cracks from the EBC layer to the composite layer. In the third stage, branched cracks within the composite layer were observed to gradually reconnect in a nearly radial pattern, progressively deteriorating the structural integrity of the triplex SiC. This delayed crack growth is by far the most important characteristic in the structural feasibility of triplex SiC, given its ceramic-matrix composite (SiCf/SiC) layer. All the aforementioned mechanisms induced a wide distribution of failure characteristics, which is reflected in the specimen-to-specimen variability. Therefore, the cracking, subsequent failure, and reliability of triplex SiC are largely influenced by the presence of inherently brittle components.
Overall, the minimal or delayed oxidation-induced ductility degradation observed in triplex SiC is overshadowed by its inherent statistical brittleness, which resulted in significant specimen-to-specimen variability. Moreover, its mechanical performance remains notably inferior compared to the allowable embrittlement limits established for steam-oxidized zirconium-based alloy claddings. These findings indicate that SiC-based claddings still require substantial improvements and strengthened design strategies to manage variability and ensure structural reliability before deployment can be considered. They also suggest that future implementation may warrant additional regulatory consideration due to the inherent brittleness observed in small-scale specimens.
