The accurate evaluation of the shut-off rod (SOR) worth is essential for the safe and reliable operation of research reactors, as it directly determines the reactor’s shutdown capability and transient response. The conventional rod-drop technique, which interprets detector signals using point-kinetics equations(PKEs), neglects the change in the neutron flux distribution during large reactivity insertions such as shut-off rods insertions in the reactor. As demonstrated in recent studies, neglecting the spatial effect of the neutron flux causes the detector response to depend on its position, raising concerns about whether the measured reactivity can truly represent the global reactivity behavior of the reactor.
In this study, the modified rod drop technique is applied to the HANARO research reactor to account for the time-dependent spatial effect of the neutron flux during shut-off rod insertions. In this approach, the conventional rod drop method is refined by introducing a correction factor that allows the detector signal to reflect the change of the flux shape function over time.
During the HANARO shut-off rod drop experiments, reactor signals are measured from three ex-core detectors, while the correction factor is obtained from Time-Dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) simulations using the McCARD/G code. For the correction factor, the flux is tallied both at the detector locations and throughout the entire core in order to account for the time-dependent variation of the flux shape function. Using these data, a normalized amplitude function is derived and used to compute the dynamic reactivity through three methods: extrapolation, inverse, and integral counting methods. The dynamic reactivity values are finally compared with the reference static reactivity worth obtained from eigenvalue calculations.
The application of the modified rod drop technique results in dynamic reactivity estimates that closely agreed with the reference static reactivity obtained from eigenvalue calculations. The spatial dependence of the estimated rod worth, which originated from the detector positions, was significantly reduced through the proposed correction process. Moreover, the consistency among the reactivity values measured from detectors at different locations within the reactor is greatly improved, demonstrating that the corrected detector signals can effectively represent the global reactivity behavior of the core during shut-off rod transients.
