Short fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites (SFRPs) have become widely adopted in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries due to their outstanding strength-to-weight ratios, processing ease, and suitability for manufacturing complex geometries. However, the mechanical behavior of injection-molded SFRPs is significantly governed by heterogeneous fiber orientation patterns and matrix inelasticity, posing substantial challenges for accurate mechanical characterization and reliable failure prediction at the structural component level. Therefore, developing robust methodologies capable of capturing this inherent anisotropy is crucial for ensuring their safe and efficient deployment in load-bearing applications.
First, the mechanical characterization of SFRPs using instrumented indentation testing (IIT) is established as a local evaluation method. Multiple series of micro-indentation experiments using an asymmetric Knoop indenter were performed to probe the local anisotropic response of SFRPs with varying fiber orientations. The resulting indentation modulus and hardness values exhibited distinct orientation-dependent trends, which systematically correlated with macroscopic transverse tensile properties of corresponding tensile test coupons. These findings demonstrate the capability of Knoop IIT as a practical, quasi-non-destructive alternative for assessing local anisotropic properties in industrial settings without extensive specimen preparation.
Secondly, a novel progressive damage accumulation model was developed for tensile failure prediction. This model is formulated within a two-step homogenization framework, where the composite is represented by pseudograin groups comprising aligned fibers in a viscoelastic-viscoplastic (VEVP) matrix. Crucially, a delayed stiffness degradation strategy is implemented, allowing damage progression only after surpassing a defined threshold. This delayed approach accurately reproduces the anisotropic, progressive failure sequences observed experimentally in SFRPs. Integrated into ABAQUS through a user-material subroutine (UMAT), the model demonstrated robust predictive capability for component-level simulations of anisotropic tensile failure.
Finally, the developed UMAT model was extended to simulate the complex, multi-axial stress state of the Knoop indentation test. By integrating process-simulated microstructures, the numerical model showed strong agreement with experimental indentation behavior. Subsequently, this validated framework was leveraged as a high-fidelity virtual data generator to train an artificial neural network (ANN). This ANN surrogate serves as a computationally efficient engine for an inverse characterization framework, demonstrating a practical pathway from experimental indentation data to the inference of local microstructural parameters. Overall, this thesis establishes a complete methodology, spanning from local experimental characterization to validated predictive simulation, thereby significantly advancing the industrial applicability of anisotropic SFRPs.
