Soft biointerfaces require materials that simultaneously offer mechanical compliance with biological tissues and stable electrical or functional performance under deformation. Conventional metal thin films and elastomer-based nanocomposites partially satisfy these requirements but remain limited by intrinsic trade-offs between conductivity, stretchability, and structural stability. To overcome these constraints, this work establishes a materials design framework that spans from nanoscale assembly engineering to macroscopic hydrogel patterning, enabling soft, high-performance interfaces for both skin-mounted and implantable applications.
In the first part of this thesis, a partially-overlapped assembly strategy for silver nanosheets (AgNSs) is introduced to enhance percolation efficiency while minimizing the filler loading. Controlled assembly at the water-oil interface produces face contacts with enlarged interfacial contact areas that reduce contact resistance and enable isotropic mechanical and electrical responses. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations reveal the AgNS geometry-governed transition of assembly configuration between edge-to-edge contact and partially-overlapped contacts, defining quantitative design rules for optimizing nanosheet dimensions. The resulting AgNS nanomembranes exhibit high conductivity, robust stretchability with minimal hysteresis, demonstrating their utility as ultrathin, skin-compatible biointerfaces.
The second part focuses on extending soft biointerfaces toward implantable systems by developing a minimally-invasive, in situ hydrogel patterning method. The approach utilizes a chemically crosslinked sacrificial mold hydrogel and a physically crosslinked frame hydrogel, both formed directly on the tissue surface via enzymatic and ion-mediated gelation. Material properties are systematically optimized to enable precise pattern formation, selective mold degradation, and minimal swelling. The patterned hydrogels can incorporate functional nanomaterials, allowing the fabrication of wireless heaters and VEGF-loaded scaffolds that support localized tissue growth.
In conclusion, these studies establish a fundamental materials design strategy—ranging from nanoscale assembly control to spatially programmed hydrogel fabrication system—for creating ideal soft biointerfaces with tunable mechanical, electrical, and biochemical functionalities. The demonstrated approaches broaden the design space for next-generation wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices and offer a foundation for future application-specific optimization.
