To achieve global carbon reduction goals, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented stringent emission regulations for marine and offshore engineering systems. The main strategies include the use of clean fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia, and hydrogen, as well as the adoption of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. Both approaches require operation under cryogenic conditions for the storage and transportation of liquefied gases, making the structural integrity and reliability of liquefied gas vessels a critical concern. Meanwhile, marine structures are continuously subjected to cyclic wave-induced loads, which cause progressive fatigue damage over time. Fatigue cracks are inevitably generated and propagated within structures, particularly at welded joints, which are the most vulnerable regions due to geometric discontinuities, material heterogeneity, and residual stresses.
Therefore, investigating the fatigue crack growth and fracture behaviour at welded regions is essential for evaluating the reliability of liquefied gas vessels operating at low temperatures. However, significant discrepancies exist between laboratory conditions and actual service environments, which limit the accuracy and reliability of directly applying experimental data in practical engineering assessments. To address this challenge, this study employs advanced data-driven analysis and optimisation techniques to process and correct data, enabling reliable extrapolation of laboratory results to real operating conditions. Furthermore, a predictive framework is proposed to estimate crack growth and fracture characteristics of materials under various practical loading and environmental conditions.
The proposed approach comprehensively considers temperature, load ratio, residual stress, and stress constraint effects, and integrates theoretical analytical formulations, finite element simulations (FEM), and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINN) to investigate and predict fatigue crack behaviour. Compared with conventional assessment methods, the present study provides a more comprehensive representation of the complex fatigue crack growth and fracture behaviour in welded structures, while achieving improved computational efficiency, enhanced predictive accuracy, and reduced conservatism.
In conclusion, this research presents an advanced and reliable data-driven methodology for analysing and predicting the fatigue crack behaviour of materials in liquefied gas vessels under cryogenic conditions, providing a robust theoretical and technical basis for the design and life assessment of marine structures operating under extreme environments.
