This study examines how the act of “rising” has expanded within sculptural practice and how the relational structures revealed through this process have evolved over time. The works originate from a critical awareness of beings socially excluded or marginalized within the logic of efficiency and standardization. Sculptures here are explored not as the mere construction of form or the completion of “erectness”, but as a practice that senses and composes relationships among beings within social contexts.
Through this process, “rising” is conceptualized as a way of seeking non-hierarchical relations among beings with heterogeneous conditions, situated within the multilayered character of sculpture where beings, materials, environments, social institutions, and the memories of matter intersect. Accordingly, “rising” critically reconsiders discarded objects, marginal materials, and stigmas repeated throughout art history, departing from linear creation or centralized structures, and instead aims for sculptural practices that construct relational configurations through the interaction of diverse beings and conditions.
This approach not only defines the formal aspects of sculpture but also operates as a method of exploring its ethical and political possibilities. Ultimately, the thesis demonstrates that sculpture can function as a practical framework for reflecting on the politics and sensibility of material culture.
