This study aims to quantitatively compare the blast-induced vibration characteristics of electronic and non-electric detonators used in tunnel excavation, thereby verifying the effectiveness of electronic detonators in terms of vibration mitigation and structural stability. Tunnel blasting is an essential process for urban development and infrastructure expansion, but it generates the ground vibrations that may lead to structural damage such as cracks and differential settlement in adjacent facilities. Conventional non-electric detonators, which exhibit a firing time deviation of approximately ±10%, can cause overlapping waveforms and amplified vibrations. In contrast, electronic detonators, capable of high-precision timing control, have emerged as a promising alternative.
To evaluate their performance, four field blasting tests were conducted at Section 2 of the Byeollae Line (Line 8 extension), which runs beneath the Amsa Water Purification Plant in Seoul. The first three tests employed non-electric detonators, while the fourth used electronic ones. Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and vibration levels were measured for each case. The collected data were used to derive a regression-based vibration prediction equation, accounting for blasting distance and charge weight. Allowable charge weights and safe distances were then estimated accordingly. In addition, two-dimensional finite element analyses (FEA) were carried out under identical geological and geometrical conditions to examine the attenuation of vertical and horizontal vibrations, as well as variations in vertical particle velocity ().
The results showed that electronic detonators reduced vibration levels by an average of over 45% compared to non-electric ones. In particular, at a vertical offset of 5 meters, the reduction rate reached approximately 59%. The comparison between measured and simulated values revealed similar trends, confirming the reliability of the numerical model. Furthermore, the analysis of indicated that electronic detonators induced shorter vibration cycles and faster damping, with amplitude attenuation rates exceeding those of non-electric detonators by approximately 5 percentage points on average. These findings suggest that the precise delay control of electronic detonators effectively suppresses wave interference and minimizes vibration transmission to surface structures.
By integrating field test results and numerical simulations, this study successfully validated the vibration control performance and design applicability of electronic detonators. The outcomes are expected to serve as a practical reference for controlled blasting design in urban tunneling projects, particularly in vibration-sensitive areas requiring enhanced construction safety and precision.
