As the automotive industry gradually shifts from “hardware performance
competition” toward “software-defined and experience-driven” competition,
    the importance of in-vehicle human–machine interface (Human–Machine
    Interface, HMI)—particularly the center-stack interactive interface—has
increased markedly during the pre-purchase experience and
decision-making stages. An increasing number of consumers form
judgments about a vehicle’s ease of use, reliability, and technological
advancement through the center-stack interface’s information organization,
consistency of interaction feedback, and quality of visual presentation
during test drives, showroom experiences, and online immersive
demonstrations. These judgments further shape consumers’ overall value
evaluations and purchase inclination. However, prior studies have largely
focused on “usage intention” or “continuance use” in the context of
in-vehicle information systems, paying relatively limited attention to
“purchase intention in the pre-purchase stage.” Moreover, evidence
remains fragmented regarding the path structure through which
center-stack HMI design elements influence purchase decisions via
cognitive and attitudinal mechanisms, with issues such as inconsistent
variable definitions and insufficient systematic testing of boundary
conditions. Against this backdrop, the present study adopts the Technology
Acceptance Model (Technology Acceptance Model, TAM) as the theoretical
backbone and integrates key constructs from in-vehicle interaction and
interface design research to build and test a mechanism of “center-stack
    HMI design quality—cognitive perceptions—attitude—purchase intention,”
with the aim of providing an actionable theoretical framework and
empirical evidence for optimizing automotive center-stack design.
At the model-construction level, this study further operationalizes
center-stack HMI design quality into four relatively independent and
measurable design dimensions: Visual Aesthetics (VA), Information Clarity
(IC), Interaction Feedback Quality (IFQ), and Cognitive Fit (CF). With respect
to TAM’s core constructs, Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) and Perceived
Usefulness (PU) are selected as mediators at the cognitive level. User
attitude (Attitude toward use/purchase, ATT) is employed to connect
cognitive evaluations with behavioral tendency, and Purchase Intention (PI)
is used as the outcome variable, thereby forming a relatively complete
pre-purchase decision chain. Meanwhile, given that automobile purchase
decisions are characterized by high investment, high risk, and high
uncertainty, this study introduces Experience (EX), Technology Interest (TI),
and Perceived Risk (PR) as moderators to examine how individual
characteristics and risk judgments influence the strength of key paths,
yielding a comprehensive model that incorporates main effects, serial
    mediation, and moderation effects.
In terms of research methodology, from October to November 2025, this
study adopted a strategy combining convenience sampling and snowball
sampling (within non-probability sampling). Relying on the online survey
platform 'Wenjuanxing', scale questionnaires were distributed to
respondents in China who possessed experience in accessing automotive
information and making car purchase decisions. After screening and
excluding invalid data, a total of 768 valid samples were obtained. Data
analysis followed a sequence of “measurement model assessment—structural
model testing—effect decomposition and robustness checks.” First, reliability
and validity tests were conducted to evaluate internal consistency as well
as convergent and discriminant validity. Second, structural equation
modeling (SEM) was applied to test structural paths and overall model fit,
and the Bootstrap method was used to assess the significance and
confidence intervals of mediation effects. Finally, hierarchical regression
and interaction-term modeling were employed to examine the moderation
effects of EX, TI, and PR, with simple slope analyses used to interpret the
direction and pattern of moderation. Overall, model fit indices indicated a
good fit, supporting the explanatory power and statistical adequacy of the
proposed variable structure and path specification.
The results indicate that center-stack HMI design quality significantly
influences users’ cognition and attitude formation in the pre-purchase
stage and promotes purchase intention through multiple pathways. First,
regarding the effects of design dimensions on PEOU, VA, IC, IFQ, and CF
all exert significant positive effects; among them, IC and CF show relatively
stronger impacts, suggesting that designs that are “easy to understand,
clearly structured, and aligned with users’ mental models” are more
effective in reducing learning costs and operational burden. Second,
regarding the effects of design dimensions on PU, CF and IC demonstrate
stable positive effects, and VA also enhances users’ judgments of system
value and product advancement to some extent. This implies that visual
aesthetics not only provides affective appeal but may also influence
usefulness evaluations through “professionalism/credibility cues.” Third, the
core TAM relationships are generally supported in the vehicle purchase
context: PEOU significantly increases PU, and both PEOU and PU
significantly affect ATT, which in turn promotes PI. Meanwhile, PEOU and
PU also have direct effects on PI, and ATT has a significant positive effect
on PI. These findings indicate that the formation of purchase intention
does not rely solely on attitudinal mediation; rather, it reflects a parallel
mechanism of “direct cognitive-driven effects + attitude-integrative effects.”
Fourth, mediation tests show that different design dimensions can exert
indirect effects on PI through paths such as “PEOU→PU→ATT,” “PEOU→ATT,” and “PU→ATT,” supporting a serial transmission logic of “design—cognition—attitude—intention.” These results further suggest that the effect
of design quality on purchase intention is not limited to immediate
favorability, but also manifests through integrated judgments of usability
and value. Fifth, moderation analyses reveal that perceived risk weakens
the conversion strength from positive attitude to purchase intention. This
indicates that under high perceived risk, even when users form a positive
attitude, concerns about distraction, safety, or system reliability may still
reduce purchase inclination. In addition, experience and technology interest
show differentiated effects on certain paths, suggesting that users at
different experience levels and interest levels are not equally sensitive to
design features, and that segmented strategies may be necessary in both
    design and marketing communications.
Based on these findings, the study makes three primary theoretical
contributions. First, it extends the TAM framework from the traditional
context of “usage/continuance intention” to “pre-purchase purchase
intention,” demonstrating that PEOU, PU, and ATT retain stable explanatory
power in high-investment consumption decisions. Second, by
dimensionalizing center-stack HMI design quality (VA, IC, IFQ, CF), it
provides a more measurable and intervenable system of design variables
for research on in-vehicle interaction design. Third, by incorporating
boundary conditions such as perceived risk, experience, and technology
interest, it reveals the context sensitivity of purchase intention formation
and offers an explanatory route for the common phenomenon of
“insufficient attitude–intention conversion.” Practically, the study suggests
that in-vehicle HMI optimization should be upgraded from mere “usability
engineering” to “purchasability engineering” oriented toward pre-purchase
conversion. Design should prioritize improving information clarity and
cognitive fit to ensure that functional paths and information presentation
align with users’ task goals; strengthen the comprehensibility and
controllability of interaction feedback to reduce uncertainty and concerns
about misoperation; and proactively manage perceived risk during product
presentations and test-drive experiences by providing transparent safety
mechanism cues and evidence of stability and reliability, thereby improving
the efficiency of converting attitude into purchase intention.
