This study investigates the relationship between self-directed learning ability (SDL) and language learning strategy use among Chinese learners of Korean, with a particular focus on the moderating effects of learning motivation and learning anxiety. While previous studies have examined learning strategies or affective factors separately, relatively little research has systematically explored how learners’ self-directed learning ability functions as a higher-order capacity that shapes strategy use under different affective conditions in the context of foreign language learning.
A total of 286 Chinese learners of Korean, including students enrolled in Korean language institutes in South Korea and Korean (or Chosŏn) language majors at universities in China, participated in the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire measuring self-directed learning ability, language learning strategies (memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, and social strategies), learning motivation, and learning anxiety. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and PROCESS Macro (Model 2). Simple slope analyses and the Johnson–Neyman technique were further employed to examine the conditional effects of the moderators across continuous levels of motivation and anxiety.
The results indicate that self-directed learning ability has a significant positive effect on overall language learning strategy use as well as on all five subcategories of strategies. Moreover, learning motivation and learning anxiety were found to play opposite moderating roles in the relationship between self-directed learning ability and strategy use. Learning motivation strengthened the positive effect of self-directed learning ability on strategy use, whereas learning anxiety weakened this relationship. Notably, the moderating effects of affective factors differed by strategy type: direct strategies (memory, cognitive, and compensation strategies) showed relatively stable effects of self-directed learning ability, while indirect strategies (metacognitive and social strategies) were more sensitive to learners’ motivational and emotional conditions. Johnson-Neyman analyses further revealed that the effects of self-directed learning ability on indirect strategies were significant only within specific ranges of motivation and anxiety.
These findings suggest that self-directed learning ability functions as a foundational capacity that enables learners to select and employ language learning strategies, but its effectiveness is contingent upon learners’ affective states, particularly for strategies requiring higher levels of self-regulation and social interaction. The study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the interplay between cognitive, affective, and strategic dimensions of foreign language learning. Pedagogically, the results highlight the importance of fostering learners’ self-directed learning ability alongside motivational support and anxiety-reducing instructional environments in Korean language education.
