The number of Chinese international students in Korea has been steadily
increasing. However, research on their cultural adaptation has primarily
focused on functional indicators, such as language proficiency and academic
performance, which do not adequately capture the emotional experiences and
changes in self-perception that arise from repeated social comparison and
evaluative situations. In particular, although Chinese international students
share a similar East Asian cultural background, subtle differences in
language use and relational norms may induce evaluative anxiety and
awkwardness, potentially triggering shame and leading students to perceive
themselves as deficient or inadequate. In this context, the present study
empirically examined the impact of shame on the cultural adaptation of
Chinese international students and investigated whether social support serves
a buffering role in this process. Furthermore, social support was categorized
by source-family support, friend support, and significant-other suppor-to
explore the differential moderating effects of each type of support on the
relationship between shame and cultural adaptation. This approach aimed to
provide a more nuanced understanding of the cultural adaptation process
and psychological protective factors for Chinese international students.
Based on prior research, the study formulated the following research
questions: First, does shame influence the cultural adaptation of Chinese
international students in Korea? Second, does overall social support
moderate the relationship between shame and cultural adaptation? Third, do
subtypes of social support (family support, friend support, significant-other
support) differentially moderate the relationship between shame and cultural
adaptation?
To address these questions, data were collected in August 2025 from 403
Chinese international students enrolled in four-year universities in Korea
through an online self-report questionnaire measuring shame, cultural
adaptation, and social support. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS
27.0 and PROCESS macro 4.1, including descriptive statistics, correlation
analysis, reliability and validity testing, difference testing, multiple regression
and moderated regression controlling for demographic variables. Patterns of
moderation were further examined using simple slope analysis and the
Johnson-Neyman (JN) technique.
The results indicated the following: First, shame significantly and negatively
predicted the cultural adaptation of Chinese international students.
Specifically, higher levels of shame were associated with lower overall
cultural adaptation, including academic, cultural, psychological, and daily life
adaptation. Second, social support was found to significantly moderate the
relationship between shame and cultural adaptation. When social support was
low, the negative effect of shame on cultural adaptation was pronounced,
whereas high social support substantially mitigated the adverse impact of
shame. Third, analyses of subtypes of social support revealed that family
support, friend support, and significant-other support each significantly
moderated the relationship between shame and cultural adaptation. Higher
levels of various types of support buffered the negative impact of shame.
In summary, this study contributes to the literature by empirically
demonstrating that self-conscious emotions such as shame can shape the
direction and quality of cultural adaptation, extending
beyond the conventional functional framework focused on language, information, and
levels of shame tended to interpret errors or misunderstandings during
cultural encounters not as natural learning experiences, but as confirmation
of their incompetence or social inadequacy. This interpretation may
repeatedly trigger self-blame and withdrawal in intercultural situations,
potentially
participation and exploratory behavior.
Moreover, by examining not only the overall moderating effect of social
support but also the effects of specific sources-family, friends, and
significant others-this study showed that the impact of shame on cultural
adaptation may vary depending on the source of support. This finding
suggests that social support functions not as a uniform protective factor, but
may have different roles and meanings depending on the provider and
relational context.
daily life skills. The findings indicate that shame is not merely a transient
negative emotion but a critical psychological factor negatively affecting the
cultural adaptation of Chinese international students. Students with higher
