In the waters surrounding the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (I-ORS), located in the middle of East China Sea, a distinctive suspended-sediment plume known as the “Ieodo plume” has been reported. Since suspended-sediment plumes have so far been discussed mainly in estuarine and coastal environments, or in the mid and deep ocean, the occurrence of such plumes in the surface layer off the shore is not well known.
Accordingly, this study conducted an integrated remote-sensing observation using satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to observe the development and dispersion of the Ieodo plume. Sentinel-2 and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) data were used to determine the overall size of the plume and analyze its behavior over a broad spatial extent, and to examine its temporal evolution and derive turbidity. By coupling these observations with the TPXO tidal model, the relationship between plume occurrence and tides has been investigated. In addition, optical sensors mounted on UAVs operated from I-ORS were used to capture the initial behavior and fine-scale morphology of the plume during its growth stage and to observe its flow around the source region. A sequence of UAV images acquired during hovering observations at the onset of plume formation was geometrically corrected and then analyzed using particle image velocimetry (PIV) to estimate the plume velocity field. Based on these observations, we interpret the generation of the Ieodo plume as driven by a decrease in internal fluid pressure induced by the interaction be-tween tidal currents and the seamount topography based on the Bernoulli principle. This study demonstrates that the combined use of satellites and UAVs enables effective monitoring of rapidly evolving suspended-sediment plumes on short time scales, and is expected to broaden our understanding of suspended-sediment phenomena governed by similar dynamical principles in the ocean.
