This study was conducted with the aim of developing structural control and reaction activity enhancement strategies for non-precious metal electrocatalysts to enable high-efficiency hydrogen production. In particular, to address catalyst activity degradation and durability limitations that hinder the commercialization of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), two strategic approaches were proposed.
In the first study, an R–Ni–MoO2/C catalyst was developed by electrochemically reconstructing a Ni–MoO2/C-based cathode. Selective Mo dissolution under open-circuit voltage (OCV) conditions induced strong metal–support interactions between Ni and MoO2, thereby facilitating electron transfer and improving structural stability. As a result, the reconstructed catalyst exhibited a low overpotential and enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared to the pristine Ni–MoO2/C. In commercial-scale AEMWE operation with an active area of 200 cm2
, the system reached 200 A (1 A cm-2) at a cell voltage of 1.9 Vcell and produced approximately 1.26 L min-1 of hydrogen at 1.85 Vcell. Over 1,000 h of continuous operation, only a marginal voltage increase of 59 mV was observed, demonstrating that high efficiency and long-term durability can be simultaneously achieved without the use of precious metals. In the second study, sulfur was doped into a NiFeCo(oxy)hydroxide electrode to enhance HER activity. The S-NiFeCo/NF electrode benefited from sulfur-induced acceleration of charge transfer, exhibiting a low overpotential of −115 mV and a reduced activation energy of 56 kJ mol-1 . Moreover, under a current density of −100 mA cm-2 , the electrode maintained excellent stability for over 400 h with a minimal degradation rate of only 0.13 mV h -1
. Overall, this work presents effective strategies for the simultaneous enhancement of activity and durability of non-precious metal catalysts through electrochemical reconstruction and heteroatom doping. These results make a practical contribution to the development of high-performance, low-cost hydrogen production electrodes suitable for AEMWE commercialization. The proposed approaches also provide an important technological foundation for the large-scale implementation and practical deployment of sustainable hydrogen production technologies.
