국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 오스트리아에서 태어나 영국에서 활동한 작곡가 죠셉 호로비츠(Joseph Horovitz, 1926-2022)의 음악적 배경을 고찰하고 그의 작품 중 하나인 《클라리넷 소나티나》(Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano(1981))을 분석하여 그 음악적 특성과 의의를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 호로비츠는 영국 신고전주의의 전통, 프랑스 현대음악의 영향, 그리고 재즈 어법을 유기적으로 결합한 독자적 음악언어를 구축하였으며, 이는 《클라리넷 소나티나》 전반에 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 작품의 구조적 특징, 동기 전개 방식, 리듬과 화성 처리, 재즈 요소의 활용 등을 중심으로 분석하였다. 1악장은 경쾌한 리듬과 명료한 형식감, 2아장은 단순한 선율 속 서정성과 안정감, 3악장은 재즈적 활력을 기반으로 한 역동성이 두드러진다. 이러한 분석을 통해 호로비츠가 전통적 소나타 형식을 유지하면서도 현대적 감각과 개성을 효과적으로 융합하였음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 국내에서 상대적으로 연구가 부족한 호로비츠의 작품을 분석했다는 점에서 의의를 가진다. 향후 그의 다른 관악 작품과의 비교, 동시대 영국 작곡가들과의 양식적 관계, 연주 해석 연구 등을 통해 호로비츠 음악의 가치에 대한 이해가 더욱 확장되기를 바란다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the musical background of Joseph Horovitz (1926–2022), an Austrian-born British composer, and to analyze one of his
works, "Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano (1981)" to reveal its musical characteristics and significance. Horovitz established his own musical language that organically
combined the English neoclassical tradition, the influence of French modern music, and jazz grammar, which is evident throughout "Clarinet Sonatina." This study analyzed the structural characteristics of the work, the way motivation was developed, the processing of rhythm and harmony, and the use of jazz elements. Movement 1 stands out for its cheerful rhythm and clear sense of form, movement 2 for lyricism and stability in simple melody, and movement 3 for its dynamics based on jazz vitality. Through this analysis, it was confirmed that Horovitz effectively fused modern sensations and individuality while maintaining the traditional Sonata form. This study is significant in that it analyzed Horovitz's work, which is relatively under-researched in Korea. In the future, it is hoped that his understanding of the value of Horovitz music will be further expanded through comparison with other wind instruments, stylistic relationships with contemporary British composers, and performance interpretation studies.
