As bleisure travel—combining business and leisure activities—continues to expand, understanding the decision-making characteristics of bleisure travelers has become increasingly important. The purpose of this study is to identify the underlying structure of bleisure travel motivations, to derive motivation-based market segments, and to examine differences in destination choice attributes and behavioral intentions (revisit intention, recommendation intention, and positive word-of-mouth) across segments. In addition, this study applies Importance–Performance Map Analysis (IPMA) to simultaneously evaluate the relative importance and performance of destination choice attributes, thereby identifying strategic priorities for destination management and marketing.
Data were collected through an online survey administered between September 10 and September 17, 2025, targeting adults who had experienced at least one domestic or international bleisure trip. A snowball sampling method was employed, focusing on office workers, public sector employees, and MICE participants with frequent business travel experience. Using a self-administered questionnaire distributed via Qualtrics, a total of 378 responses were collected. After excluding six incomplete or careless responses, 372 valid cases were used for analysis. Respondents were classified according to their bleisure participation type into business traveler–led bleisure (Type A: solo leisure by the business traveler) and companion bleisure (Types B+C: joint leisure with companions or companion-only leisure).
Survey items were developed based on prior studies, in-depth interviews, and a pilot study, and consisted of measures of bleisure travel motivation, destination choice attributes, behavioral intentions, sociodemographic characteristics, and travel pattern variables.
Exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were first conducted to verify the latent factor structures of travel motivation and destination choice attributes, with items showing low convergence or theoretical inconsistency being removed sequentially. As a result, bleisure travel motivation was identified as a four-factor structure—learning and experience, social prestige, well-being and escape, and relationship and bonding—while destination choice attributes were classified into seven factors: accessibility and convenience, infrastructure, culture and tradition, natural environment, cost, safety and hygiene, and hospitality and information. All factors demonstrated acceptable levels of internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis was subsequently conducted to assess the measurement model’s fit and validity, after which K-means cluster analysis was performed using motivation factor scores.
The cluster analysis revealed two distinct bleisure traveler segments: a multidimensional high-motivation group and a prestige-deemphasized practical group. Independent sample t-tests and variance analyses showed that the high-motivation group reported significantly higher evaluations of destination choice attributes and stronger behavioral intentions than the practical group, indicating that motivation-based psychological segmentation is closely associated with bleisure travel loyalty. Cross-tabulation analysis further revealed a significant association between participation type and cluster membership, with business traveler–led bleisure (Type A) being more prevalent in the high-motivation group and companion bleisure (Types B+C) more common in the practical group. In addition, significant differences were observed in travel pattern variables such as length of stay, proportion of leisure activities, and diversity of activity combinations (e.g., culture, gastronomy, relaxation, and shopping), suggesting that travelers engaging in more diverse leisure experiences tend to exhibit higher destination evaluations and stronger future behavioral intentions.
The IPMA results indicated that hospitality and safety and hygiene were classified as “concentrate here” attributes, characterized by high importance but relatively low performance. Infrastructure and accessibility were identified as “keep up the good work” attributes with both high importance and high performance. Culture and tradition and natural environment fell into the “possible overkill” category, while cost was classified as a “low priority” attribute. These findings suggest that while physical infrastructure and accessibility should be maintained as core strengths, improving the perceived performance of hospitality and safety-related attributes should be prioritized to enhance bleisure destination competitiveness. By integrating motivation-based market segmentation with IPMA in the bleisure context, this study contributes both academically and practically by simultaneously identifying segment-specific behavioral differences and strategic priorities for destination attribute management.
