As the incidence of musculoskeletal and neurological diseases increases in elderly companion dogs, there is a growing need for quantitative tools to objectively evaluate the effects of rehabilitation therapy. However, most assessment methods currently used in clinical practice rely largely on subjective judgment by veterinarians, which limits standardized comparison of treatment outcomes and objective communication with pet owners. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising non-invasive technique for quantifying muscle activity, but its clinical application in dogs is limited due to unstable electrode-skin contact caused by dense hair and specific skin characteristics, resulting in poor signal quality. To address these limitations, this study developed a gelatin-based, biocompatible hydrogel electrode designed to achieve stable electrode contact and sufficient electrical conductivity without hair removal. The hydrogel was composed of materials with verified safety to minimize skin irritation, and its electrical conductivity and stability were evaluated through impedance measurements. Stepwise pilot experiments were then conducted in a single dog and multiple dogs to assess whether stable sEMG signals could be obtained under non-shaved conditions. The results showed that the hydrogel electrode maintained low impedance values within an acceptable range even without hair removal and reliably reflected changes in muscle activity. Consistent increases in muscle activation were observed under both static and dynamic conditions, supporting the feasibility of sEMG measurements in companion dogs using the proposed approach. However, several limitations were identified, including motion artifacts during dynamic tasks due to the use of wired equipment and difficulties in achieving reproducible measurements after electrode reattachment. These findings indicate the need for improved measurement environments and standardized electrode placement protocols in future studies. This study serves as a preliminary investigation demonstrating the feasibility of a novel non-shaving electrode approach for canine sEMG measurement. It provides foundational data for the development of evidence-based assessment methods in veterinary rehabilitation. The proposed hydrogel electrode also shows potential for broader application in various animal biosignal measurement systems.
