This study aimed to analyze the effects of scalp coloring, a surface-based color adjustment management method, on the perception of visual gaps caused by scalp
exposure, appearance perception, and psychological responses. With the increasing interest in hair loss management, various aesthetic approaches have been explored; however, previous studies have primarily focused on physical changes to hair or treatment-oriented interventions. In contrast, this study focused on the potential of visual compensation effects achieved through color adjustment of the scalp surface without altering hair quantity or structure. A case study approach combined with mixed research methods was employed. The participants consisted of one individual from each age group—20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s—and comparative analyses were conducted before and after the application of scalp coloring. Photographic documentation was performed under controlled conditions with identical lighting intensity, camera angles, and white-light environments to minimize external variables.
The analysis criteria included changes in scalp–hair lightness contrast, perceived visual density, perceived gap area, naturalness of tonal continuity between scalp and hair, participant evaluations, and observer evaluations. The results indicated that, across all age groups, the lightness contrast between the scalp and hair was reduced after scalp coloring application. This led to a visual correction effect in which hair density was perceived to increase despite no actual change in hair volume.
Additionally, areas previously recognized as scalp exposure were reduced, resulting in a more organized and visually stable overall head appearance. Participant evaluations demonstrated overall improvements in appearance satisfaction, self-confidence, and psychological stability. Observer evaluations also revealed positive changes in terms of visual naturalness and image stability.
These findings suggest that scalp coloring is an aesthetic management method that contributes not only to external visual compensation but also to the tabilization of appearance perception and positive psychological responses. This study holds significance in that it presents the academic and practical potential of color adjustment –based approaches within the field of hair loss management.
