This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the fengshui perception of Gobong Gi Dae-seung (奇大升, 1527-1572), a prominent Neo-Confucian scholar of mid-Joseon Korea, and examines the locational evolution of Wolbong Seowon (月峯書院), the Confu...
This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the fengshui perception of Gobong Gi Dae-seung (奇大升, 1527-1572), a prominent Neo-Confucian scholar of mid-Joseon Korea, and examines the locational evolution of Wolbong Seowon (月峯書院), the Confucian academy established to enshrine his memory. The research aims to propose a new academic framework for integrated fengshui-geographical studies that organically connects person, thought, and space. Gi Dae-seung's fengshui perception transcends simplistic notions of fortune-telling or superstitious geomancy, embodying instead a philosophical and practical wisdom grounded in Neo-Confucian natural philosophy and Confucian ethical thought, particularly the virtues of filial piety (孝) and fraternal affection (友愛), which seeks harmonious coexistence among nature, humanity, and community. This approach reinterprets space not merely as a physical location but as an ethical realm imbued with moral and spiritual significance, aligning with the Neo-Confucian concept of the unity of Heaven and humanity (天人合一) as a practical strategy for realizing harmonious connections between human beings and the natural order (理) in the construction of life and social order.
The research methodology encompasses meticulous examination of primary sources including the Gobongjip (高峯集) and Wolbong Seowonji (月峯書院誌), combined with field investigations and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of Gi Dae-seung's residential sites (yangtaek 陽宅) and burial grounds (eumtaek 陰宅) in the Gwangsan-gu region, as well as the three successive locations of Wolbong Seowon: the original Mangcheonsa site (1578), the second location at Sanwol-dong, and the current site at Gwanggok village. The study interprets the interrelationships between space and topography through the theoretical lenses of fengshui's forms-and-configurations theory (hyeongse-ron 形勢論) and morphological theory (hyeongguk-ron 形局論). The analysis reveals that Gi Dae-seung's residential spaces and family burial sites faithfully adhered to classical fengshui principles such as "mountain at the back, water in front" (baesan-imsu 背山臨水), "dragon's circling protection of ancestors" (hoeryong-gojo 回龍顧祖), and "nest-like auspicious spot" (wa-hyeonghyeol 窩形穴), while practically embodying Confucian virtues of filial piety and fraternal affection in spatial configuration. Particularly noteworthy is Gi Dae-seung's altruistic act of yielding his designated burial site (sinhu-jiji 身後之地) to his elder brother, demonstrating that fengshui served not as a tool for personal gain but as an ethical practice for the welfare and harmony of family and community.
Wolbong Seowon, after two relocations, ultimately settled in an exceptionally auspicious site (gilji 吉地) where Pansadeungsan Mountain, the Hwangryong River, and Bine Peak form a harmonious configuration. This positioning represents not merely geographical optimization but a phenomenon of securing human-geographical legitimacy through the spatial reproduction of the thought and life of the enshrined figure, Gi Dae-seung. Comprehensively, Gi Dae-seung's fengshui perception and the locational evolution of Wolbong Seowon constitute a significant case study demonstrating that mid-Joseon Neo-Confucian scholars' fengshui perception represented a form of "spatial philosophy" that integrated nature and humanity, morality and space, history and community. This research addresses both fengshui perspectives and human-geographical legitimacy issues that have been inadequately explored in existing seowon studies, proposing an integrated methodology for seowon site theory and fengshui-geographical research. Gi Dae-seung's fengshui embodies a Confucian geomantic perception that combines rationality with practicality, demonstrating its reinterpretation not as mere superstition but as a foundation for scholarly and ethical life, thereby contributing to a profound understanding of spatial perception and practical manifestations in Joseon Neo-Confucianism.
