As stipulated in the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, "revitalization" and "re-creation" are fundamental objectives in intangible cultural heritage (ICH) preservation. Since the State Council's 2006 announcement of China's first national-level ICH representative projects and South Korea's December 7, 1964, designation of "Important Intangible Cultural Properties" (later reclassified as National ICH), the "ICH craze" has maintained momentum for 15 years through government investment, academic engagement, public participation, and industrial expansion, achieving globally recognized milestones. The cultural ecosystem of mural ICH techniques now integrates not only inheritors but also government agencies, researchers, modern designers, cultural tourism operators, and consumers. Amid evolving socio-cultural-technological dynamics, the preservation and innovation of mural ICH face complex challenges, including semantic shifts, functional transformations, and contextual adaptations, resulting in a diversified ecosystem. Scholars must adopt integrated, systematic, and dynamic research approaches to clarify the intrinsic logic between core value systems, cultural elements, and design methodologies. Through multi-path design participation, this study aims to establish cognitive frameworks and collaborative innovation strategies for mural ICH revitalization. By focusing on mural techniques under the "traditional handicrafts" category of ICH, this research provides new perspectives, approaches, and methodologies for designing innovative ecosystems and modern value transformation of mural ICH techniques. This study adopts a "value layer-cognitive layer-method layer-summary" framework, focusing on four key dimensions. First, at the value layer, we examine the core values of mural art as intangible cultural heritage (ICH) during social transformation. We systematically analyze the evolving characteristics of mural ICH during societal transitions, identifying complex challenges and contradictions. Using VOSviewer's knowledge graph analysis tool, we construct a knowledge system of current research, conduct keyword co-occurrence clustering and comparative analysis, and establish a cultural perspective for ICH studies. Through field investigations and case studies of Qushui mural painting techniques, Tongdu Temple Buddhist paintings, and Guangping water-land paintings, we map a value evolution process: "from bodily memory to endogenous creativity, from fragmented heterogeneity to systematic organization, and from interculturality to collaborative innovation, " which forms the value-oriented foundation of this research. Second, at the cognitive layer, we propose the elements and composition of the cultural ecosystem of mural ICH. We systematically review the theoretical development and practical experiences of cultural ecology theory,
This study explores the relationship between intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and its ecological context through three dimensions: conceptual evolution, value connotation, and preservation-transmission. First, based on field investigations and questionnaire surveys conducted at Goge Temple in Qingzhou and Wutun Village's Re Gong murals in Tongren County, Qinghai, the research analyzes the current status of mural art and cultural ecology, along with design participation methodologies. Second, building upon these findings, it proposes a "two-tiered, seven-element" framework for mural ICH techniques: the ontological layer (subject, space, technology, representation) and the environmental layer (politics, industry, services), providing a systematic, holistic, and dynamic cognitive framework. Third, at the methodological level, the study advocates for a digital transformation-driven innovative design ecosystem. Following the path of "deconstruction-reconstruction-expression-regeneration, " it establishes an innovative design methodology system comprising: diversified cultural forms and social functions, multi-stakeholder participation in cultural space construction, and public services fostering cultural confidence. Through the establishment of this system, the methodologies and elements for design participation in the innovative transformation of mural-related intangible cultural heritage (ICH) techniques have been systematically integrated and reorganized. This process spans the entire innovation cycle from regional cultural resources to globally shared values, forming a sustainable development cycle through "regional revitalization" to create a digitally-driven, design-participatory ecosystem for mural ICH techniques. The study constructs the innovative design ecosystem of ICH through three developmental phases: "handcrafted production ecosystem →industrial production ecosystem →digital intelligent ecosystem. " Fifth, in conclusion and perspective, during social transformation, the developmental elements of mural ICH techniques collectively form an integrated cultural innovation ecosystem. Through design participation and transformation, the value of mural ICH techniques continues to be amplified. It is essential to establish a cultural innovation ecosystem mechanism for mural ICH techniques to promote their integrated development across "historical-contemporary" and "regional-global" dimensions. Looking ahead, new possibilities for ICH's ecosystem include digital artisans and cultural makers, scenario innovation and perceptual integration, as well as digital cultural communities. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach combining literature review, case analysis, knowledge mapping, field surveys, and systematic research to examine mural art as a form of intangible cultural heritage. Through a design participation framework, it identifies three core dimensions of cultural innovation ecosystems: the intrinsic value of mural techniques, their cultural ecosystem components, and innovative design environments. The research outlines distinct objectives and value propositions for design-driven mural innovation across three domains-handcrafted production, industrial manufacturing, and potential intelligent/biological technologies. By addressing technical pathways and challenges, it establishes a methodological framework that facilitates core value extraction, activation of endogenous momentum, revitalization of cultural resources, empowerment of diverse stakeholders, and cultivation of cultural communities.
