Since the beginning of the new century, Chinese documentaries have experienced continuous expansion in creative production mechanisms, broadcasting channels, and industrial scale. National and provincial professional channels have launched successively, and the output and box office of theatrical documentaries have shown an overall upward trend. Meanwhile, online and mobile platforms have continuously increased their investment in documentary content. Under the dual influence of policy support and technological innovation, Chinese documentaries have formed a multi-layered dissemination pattern centered on television, cinema, and streaming media. However, this “quantitative prosperity” has not fully translated into international influence and cross-cultural communication power. Chinese documentaries still primarily circulate within the domestic space and face structural constraints in narrative quality, emotional expression, audience stickiness, and acceptance by international audiences. Existing documentary research has long focused on authenticity, ideology, and social functions, while systematic studies on “emotional narrative” and “audience empathy mechanisms” remain relatively weak. There is a distinct gap between textual analysis and research on audience psychological mechanisms, lacking a comprehensive analytical framework that accounts for both creative logic and audience psychology.
Against this background, this study focuses on Chinese humanistic documentaries, specifically representative works where humanistic care and emotional expression occupy a central position. The discussion centers on the core question: “How does emotional narrative activate audience empathy and transform into recommendation intention through perceived value and satisfaction?” Specifically, the research attempts to answer three interrelated sub-questions: First, how do Chinese humanistic documentaries construct emotional narratives through narrative structure and formal elements within the contemporary Chinese socio-cultural context, organizing the visual experience around human destiny and humanistic care? Second, how do empathy mechanisms—such as emotional resonance, role identification, and reflective experience—function when audiences view such works, and how do they influence value perception and overall satisfaction? Third, can the psychological chain of “Emotional Narrative—Empathy Mechanism—Perceived Value—Satisfaction—Recommendation Intention” be empirically verified through a quantitative model, thereby providing a theoretical tool with greater explanatory power for the communication effects of Chinese humanistic documentaries?
At the theoretical level, based on a systematic review of discourses on documentary authenticity, humanistic care, and emotional narrative, this study introduces Empathy Theory from the fields of psychology and communication, as well as the Value–Satisfaction–Loyalty (VSL) model from consumer behavior research. It proposes an integrated analytical framework of “Emotional Narrative—Empathy Mechanism—Perceived Value—Satisfaction—Recommendation Intention.” Compared to traditional documentary research centered on “authenticity” and “ideology,” this study attempts to treat the empathy mechanism as a key mediating link connecting textual strategies with audience behavioral responses. Simultaneously, it migrates the VSL model from the context of commodity consumption to that of humanistic documentary viewing, redefining “loyalty” and “repurchase intention” in the model as “recommendation intention” and “intention for continued attention” to better fit the characteristics of cultural content consumption. Through this theoretical integration, the study aims to bridge the gap between documentary text research and audience psychological mechanism research, constructing a clear logical path from emotional narrative strategies and empathy mechanisms to behavioral intentions.
At the case study level, the research takes the documentary Last Train Home (2009) as a typical case, placing it within the developmental context of Chinese humanistic documentaries. It examines how the film constructs an emotional narrative with both realistic texture and humanistic warmth within the highly daily yet symbolic narrative situation of the Spring Festival travel rush (Chunyun), utilizing strategies such as spatialized narrative structure, multiple narrative perspectives, and character shaping. Through a close reading of the film’s narrative layers, visual style, camera organization, sound design, and character relationships, three key dimensions are extracted from the perspective of audience perception: first, “Narrative Structure Elements” related to storyline clarity and spatiotemporal arrangement; second, “Formal Expression Elements” related to formal aesthetics such as composition, camera movement, editing rhythm, and sound design; and third, “Empathy Elements” related to experiences of human destiny, emotional tension, role identification, and empathetic care. These perceptual dimensions abstracted from the case study are further transformed into scale dimensions for independent variables in the empirical study, providing a concrete basis for subsequent model construction.
The empirical part constructs an audience acceptance model covering “Perception Elements—Psychological Response—Behavioral Intention” based on the aforementioned theoretical construction and textual analysis. Using bullet-screen (Danmu) video sites as the primary survey field, a statistical analysis was conducted on 518 valid questionnaires from video platform audiences. Through reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effect tests on variables such as narrative structure elements, formal elements, empathy elements, perceived value, satisfaction, and recommendation intention, this study verified the proposed theoretical hypotheses. The results indicate that: the narrative structure elements, formal elements, and empathy elements of documentaries all have a significant positive impact on the audience’s perceived value, satisfaction, and recommendation intention, with varying intensities of effect across different psychological outcomes; perceived value and satisfaction play a significant partial mediating role between “perception elements” and “recommendation intention,” constituting the key psychological channel through which emotional narrative influences audience behavioral intention. Thus, this study empirically supports the psychological transmission path of “Emotional Narrative—Empathy—Perceived Value & Satisfaction—Recommendation Intention,” indicating that emotional narrative and empathy mechanisms are not only important components of the aesthetic experience of Chinese humanistic documentaries but also crucial driving factors promoting audience recommendation behavior and sustained attention.
In summary, the main contributions of this study are: First, introducing the analytical perspective of emotional narrative and empathy mechanisms into documentary research, extending the theoretical tradition long centered on authenticity and ideology to the level of audience psychological processes and behavioral intentions, and proposing an analytical framework available for further testing. Second, by migrating the VSL model to the context of humanistic documentaries, it reconstructs the connotation of the “Value—Satisfaction—Loyalty” chain in cultural content consumption, enriching interdisciplinary discussions on cultural product consumption behavior. Third, methodologically, it integrates textual analysis with empirical questionnaire research, combining case close reading with quantitative modeling to provide a replicable research paradigm for understanding the creative strategies and audience acceptance mechanisms of Chinese humanistic documentaries. From a practical perspective, the research results provide empirical grounds for humanistic documentary creators in narrative structure design, formal aesthetic application, and emotional cue layout, and also offer references for platform operators and policymakers to understand and optimize audience cultivation and promotion strategies. This study has limitations such as a single sample platform and a limited range of model variables; future research can further expand and test the proposed analytical framework across different platforms and types of documentaries.
