(Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, UTAUT)에서 사용 의도(UI)가 기술 수용을 예측하는 가장 직접적이고 강력한 선행 변수임이 실증적으로 입증된 바 있다.

(Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, UTAUT)에서 사용 의도(UI)가 기술 수용을 예측하는 가장 직접적이고 강력한 선행 변수임이 실증적으로 입증된 바 있다.

Contemporary human society is in the midst of a profound mobility revolution, a core driver of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, within which the Intelligent Connected Vehicle (ICV) has emerged as a central agent of this paradigm shift. The trajectory of ICV evolution is no longer focused solely on superior mechanical performance but has shifted emphasis towards maximizing vehicle intelligence, connectivity, and, ultimately, the quality of experience provided to humans. In this transformative landscape, the automotive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is gaining increasing strategic importance as the critical touchpoint and hub connecting users—drivers and passengers—with the complex digital ecosystem of the vehicle. Modern HMI has evolved beyond a mere channel for functional commands into a comprehensive interactive space that supports users in perceiving information, forming emotional bonds, and making optimal contextual decisions during their interaction with the vehicle. Consequently, the quality of HMI design has become a decisive factor directly influencing the user's positive perception of the ICV's core value and, ultimately, their behavioral intention to adopt and consistently use it. Particularly, as autonomous driving technology advances from SAE J3016 Level 2 to Level 3 and beyond, the driver's role is transitioning from an 'active controller' to a 'system supervisor' and 'experience enjoyer'. This shift presents a critical challenge for HMI design: under the absolute premise of safety, it must effectively convey vast amounts of information while simultaneously providing an intuitive, efficient, and personalized comfortable experience. Empirical research from the McKinsey Global Institute (2023), which identified User Experience (UX) derived from HMI as one of the top three factors influencing consumer vehicle purchasing decisions—after safety and range—underscores that HMI has transcended being a mere technical interface to become a core element defining brand loyalty and market competitiveness.
However, a meticulous review of current academic research and practical development in automotive HMI reveals a significant 'cognition-practice gap' between theory and application. On one hand, academia has produced numerous studies on various HMI design elements affecting UX, such as visual representation, interaction logic, and information architecture. Yet, these studies often tend to focus on specific, isolated elements, adopting a fragmented approach that leaves a relative absence of systematic and integrated analysis regarding the holistic impact and underlying mechanisms of the complex interplay of multiple design elements on the user. On the other hand, a substantial portion of existing research focuses its evaluation on basic levels of usability, failing to adequately investigate the user's deep cognitive load, emotional responses, and the mechanism through which these psychological factors develop into ultimate behavioral intention. This research bias essentially reflects a structural imbalance between HMI design elements and users' psychological expectations and value judgment processes.
The key to bridging this gap lies in the understanding that the user's evaluation of HMI value is not a simple functional judgment but a complex process of trade-off. Users subconsciously weigh the Perceived Benefits—and the Perceived Sacrifices—they must willingly incur, forming a comprehensive value judgment. As Zeithaml's Perceived Value Theory indicates, the actual driver of final behavioral decision-making is the 'perceived value' formed through the non-linear interaction between these benefits and sacrifices. This value-based cognitive process likely acts as a core mediating mechanism linking specific HMI design characteristics to the user's final adoption and continued Usage Intention. Furthermore, Davis's Technology Acceptance Model and Venkatesh et al.'s Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology have empirically demonstrated that UI is the most direct and powerful predictor of technology acceptance.
Nevertheless, existing literature lacks sufficient in-depth and integrated theoretical explanation and empirical verification regarding the dynamic causal mechanism by which core HMI design elements—specifically operability, semantic design, layout, tone & manner, and interaction—differentially stimulate the user's psychological constructs of PB and PS, ultimately influencing behavioral intention. This theoretical void poses direct challenges for HMI design practice. Lacking a robust theoretical framework, designers often rely on empirical intuition, potentially leading to technically advanced HMI systems that cause user confusion or excessive cognitive load, thereby compromising safety. The need for research providing a theoretical basis is more critical than ever, especially for formulating systematic design strategies to minimize user cognitive conflict when designing multi-sensory interfaces for conditional automation (Level 3+).
To address this research gap and contribute to solving practical challenges, this study, grounded in the Value-based Adoption Model and TAM, establishes and empirically validates an integrated research model combining multidisciplinary perspectives from Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, and Design Science. The primary objective is to systematically investigate the mechanism through which five core HMI design elements influence ultimate UI via the dual mediating pathways of PB and PS, thereby empirically elucidating the causal path from design elements to behavioral intention through the user's internal value assessment process.
To achieve this, six main hypotheses were derived from the literature. An online survey was conducted with automobile users in China, yielding 489 valid responses analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 and AMOS 24.0. The analysis included descriptive statistics, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, correlation analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling.
The hypothesis testing results are as follows: H1, that HMI design elements positively affect PB, was supported. Specifically, operability (H1-1), semantic design (H1-2), layout (H1-3), tone & manner (H1-4), and interaction (H1-5) all significantly positively affected PB. H2, that HMI design elements negatively affect PS, was supported, with all sub-elements (H2-1 to H2-5) significantly reducing PS. H3 (PB positively affects UI) and H4 (PS negatively affects UI) were supported, reconfirming the value judgment process as a key predictor. Finally, PB partially mediated the relationship between HMI design elements and UI (H5 supported), with significant mediation observed for all paths except tone & manner (H5-4). Similarly, PS partially mediated the relationship (H6 supported), with all specific mediating effects (H6-1 to H6-5) being statistically significant.
Theoretically, this study expands HMI and technology acceptance research by proposing an integrated model explaining the acceptance mechanism via the user's intrinsic value judgment process. Practically, it provides actionable insights for predicting how design choices influence PB and PS, demonstrating that all elements reduce PS, while most (except tone & manner) enhance PB, thereby informing more effective, user-centric HMI design strategies. In conclusion, this study empirically validates the importance and feasibility of shifting from a technology-centric HMI development paradigm towards a 'value-centered HMI design' approach that places the user's psychological value exchange process at its core.
