This doctoral thesis investigates the reception of Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Japan, focusing on the cross-cultural evolution of the “Three Greats” – Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, and Cao Cao. This research aims to systematically organise how the core characters of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, introduced to Japan during the Edo period, were interpreted and reconstructed across different historical periods, cultural contexts, and media forms. It seeks to elucidate the internal mechanisms of cultural filtering and creative transformation within Sino-Japanese literary exchange.
This paper focuses on analysing the dynamic evolution of the “Three Absolutes” persona. Zhuge Liang's image underwent a shift from deification to humanisation, with Yoshikawa Eiji toning down his supernatural attributes and emphasising his pragmatic spirit as a statesman. In the modern work “Party-Loving Kongming”, he is further reconstructed as a contemporary sage, embodying Japanese culture's affinity for rationality and relatability. Guan Yu's image of “supreme righteousness” merged with the samurai spirit, though his character flaws were exaggerated to heighten dramatic effect. In visual media, exaggeration techniques emphasise martial prowess. Cao Cao's image transformation is most pronounced, with Japan's reception history showing a persistent trend of “re-evaluation”. He gradually evolved from a villain into a complex figure combining the talents of a conqueror with the temperament of a poet. This reflects Japanese culture's unique understanding of power dynamics.
Research indicates that the evolution of character portrayals has been significantly influenced by the dual drivers of Japan's socio-cultural psychology and media characteristics. During the Edo period, the original moral outlook was filtered through the framework of “encouraging virtue and punishing vice”. In the post-war period of high economic growth, works became a forum for discourse reflecting on history. In contemporary popular culture, characters are transformed into cultural symbols through techniques such as moeification and trans-temporal narrative approaches. This process of reception embodies selective absorption and creative transformation based on indigenous values.
The conclusion of this paper is that the history of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms' reception in Japan represents a dynamic process of continually reconstructed character portrayals, revealing the core mechanism of “localisation” in cross-cultural transmission. Only after passing through cultural filters and adjustments to values does an imported text gain vitality within a new context. This research not only deepens our understanding of Sino-Japanese literary exchange history but also provides a significant case study for the study of cross-cultural imagery and classical text transmission. It offers valuable insights into the operational logic of Japanese popular culture.
