The present study begins by outlining how major national policy frameworks—such as the EU’s Digital Europeinitiatives, Korea’s Digital New Dealand Metaverse Strategy, and China’s 2022–2026 VR Action Plan—address safety, user experience, and standardization. Building on this contextual review, the study identifies how advances in display technology, optical systems, rendering pipelines, tracking methods, haptics, audio architecture, and network protocols simultaneously constrain and enable the exterior design of VR headsets. Technologies including pancake optics, inside-out tracking, foveated rendering, and Wi-Fi 6E–based wireless systems are shown to be directly tied to design goals of lighter form factors, low latency, and high operational efficiency. From an industry standpoint, while the spread of standalone devices, the expansion of B2B applications, and a growing premium market segment mark clear progress, persistent challenges such as comfort of wear, thermal management, battery performance, and cybersickness indicate the need for design innovations grounded in cognitive theory.
The study’s primary aim is to systematically clarify how design factors interact with human cognition and to develop concrete design principles and an evaluation framework that jointly reflect both policy constraints and technological limits. To this end, the concepts of embodied experience, cognitive load, familiarity, and system coherence are mapped directly onto design elements such as structural layout, optical placement, weight distribution, wearing mechanism, materiality, texture, color, and detailing. Based on this mapping, an evaluation model consisting of six higher-level dimensions and approximately three sub-indicators per dimension was constructed and validated through a mixed-method approach involving surveys, SEM analysis, expert interviews, and content analysis. The study adopts a three-step methodology—conceptual analysis, case comparison, and empirical validation—and focuses on the period after 2019, when standalone VR devices entered widespread use.
The research is motivated by the observation that discussions of VR headset design remain heavily oriented toward technical specifications—resolution, refresh rate, field of view—while lacking analytical structures that directly connect device form to users’ cognitive experience. To address this gap, the study integrates four cognitive frameworks—embodied cognition, cognitive load theory, cognitive affordance, and distributed cognition—to establish a coherent analytical system linking physical design to users’ perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral responses. This synthesis forms the basis for six evaluation dimensions—(A) cognitive clarity, (B) wearing comfort, (C) visual aesthetics, (D) interaction intuitiveness, (E) sustained immersion, and (F) safety and durability—each refined into measurable indicators. A user evaluation using Likert-scale items was then conducted across six representative devices (Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro, Sony PS VR2, Pico 4, HTC Vive XR Elite, Valve Index) to quantify design strengths and weaknesses and to assess the practical explanatory power of the proposed model.
The research proceeds through four analytical steps: developing a cognition–design mapping diagram, systematizing the six evaluation dimensions and their sub-indicators, conducting empirical comparisons across leading devices, and synthesizing findings to derive improvement strategies. The embodied cognition perspective illuminates how weight distribution and form shape the user’s bodily schema. Cognitive load theory highlights how visual distortion, imbalance, or discomfort deplete working-memory resources. Cognitive affordance explains how form, color, and material function as cues aligned with users’ mental models. Distributed cognition draws attention to the coherence among headset, controllers, spatial environment, and user actions. Converting these theoretical insights into evaluation items allows formerly vague concepts such as “immersion” or “comfort” to be specified as measurable phenomena.
Empirical results confirm that the proposed six-dimension framework accounts well for actual user experience. The most influential factors proved to be cognitive clarity, comfort of wear, and sustained immersion. Visual sharpness, minimal distortion, balanced weight, reduced facial pressure, battery performance, external-device dependency, and natural MR switching were found to have significant effects on satisfaction. Apple Vision Pro scored highest in clarity and aesthetics but lower in comfort and weight balance. Meta Quest 3 and Pico 4 performed strongly in comfort and immersion continuity, though they were evaluated as less premium in appearance. PS VR2 excelled in immersive continuity but revealed room for improvement in interaction intuitiveness. Vive XR Elite and Valve Index showed strong intuitiveness and durability but require better long-duration comfort. These results demonstrate that the proposed evaluation framework captures meaningful differences in product positioning rather than functioning as a purely conceptual taxonomy.
The study further shows that exterior design operates as a cognitive mechanism influencing perceptual realism, processing efficiency, emotional trust, willingness to remain immersed, learning curves for interaction, experiential continuity, and the user’s long-term confidence in the device. Design thus functions not merely as a visual outcome but as a mediator of cognitive transitions. The six evaluation dimensions serve as quantifiable foundations for decision-making in product planning, design development, and performance verification.
The study offers three major implications. First, at the academic level, it bridges cognitive theory with design research by converting abstract psychological constructs into measurable indicators and by presenting an integrated flow from theory to empirical evidence to design guidelines. Second, in practical terms, it identifies actionable design recommendations—improved weight balance, reduced facial pressure, modular batteries, inclusive design for eyeglass users, enhanced durability, and smoother MR transitions—and emphasizes a shift in R&D priorities from specification-driven competition to user-experience-centered factors. The framework can also serve as a preliminary evaluation tool during prototype development. Third, at the industrial and societal level, the proposed framework can function as a universal reference for education, healthcare, training, and remote collaboration contexts, where safety, comfort, and sustained immersion are essential for adoption. The cognitive-based evaluation logic can be extended to AR glasses, wearables, metaverse interfaces, and AI-mediated interaction systems, offering a common foundation for next-generation technology design.
Limitations include the restricted representativeness of the sample, reliance on short-term self-reported experiences, limited engagement with emotional and sociocultural dimensions, and the rapid turnover of relevant technologies. Future research should incorporate larger and more diverse user groups, broaden application scenarios, and employ multimodal measures such as eye-tracking, EEG, HRV, EMG, and system logs. Further theoretical expansions—drawing on affective engineering, social presence, immersion theory, and emotional archetypes—are also needed. Continued validation across AR, MR, and XR devices, AI-personalized interfaces, and metaverse environments will benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration with fields including industrial engineering, medicine, education, and management.
