This study aims to elucidate the phenomenon in which the seemingly common form of the “diary” in the two major cultural spheres of East Asia—Japan and China—has followed markedly divergent trajectories in its literary development. Previous scholarship has primarily focused on refined national literary studies centered on Heian women’s diaries in Japan, and philological or historical research on individual diary works in China. However, systematic comparative studies of diary literature in both countries, which trace back to their cultural roots and explain similarities and differences, have remained an important academic gap. This asymmetry and imbalance in research constitute the starting point of the present study and the innovative challenge it seeks to address.
The academic value of this research lies in three dimensions. First, it places the core texts of Japan and China—previously discussed separately—on the same platform for the first time, thereby introducing a genuine comparative perspective into East Asian diary literature studies. Second, by going beyond mere textual analysis and re-examining the conditions of formation and cultural relativity of the diary as a literary genre, it contributes to the deepening of genre theory. Third, by breaking away from the one-directional historical view of influence—“from China to Japan”—and instead empirically tracing the dynamics of bidirectional and cyclical cultural exchange, including ancient influences and the modern “re-importation” of concepts, it reconstructs the very framework of understanding the history of East Asian literary exchange.
The greatest originality of this study lies in the construction of an innovative research framework of“dual origins and triangular comparison.”Specifically, it contrasts Tosa Nikki, the first Japanese diary literature that employed kana and literary fiction, with Lainanlu, the oldest Chinese diary possessing independent stylistic significance and grounded in practicality, thereby clarifying that the origins of diaries in the two countries diverged into “literature” and “record” (the first comparison). Furthermore, upon confirming this fundamental difference, it introduces Rushu Ji, the artistic pinnacle of Chinese travel diaries that integrates scholarship with reflections on landscape, and juxtaposes it with Tosa Nikki (the second comparison). Through this triangular comparison of the three works, the study reveals that Japanese diary literature achieved a “single leap” toward “personal emotion” and “fictional artistry” in Tosa Nikki, whereas Chinese diary literature developed gradually and incrementally from the practical foundation of Lainanlu to Rushu Ji, ultimately establishing a system of “scholarly erudition” and “public value.”
Methodologically, the study is grounded in philological evidence and systematically combines approaches from comparative literature and comparative culture. Specifically, it conducts meticulous internal textual analyses of narrative perspective, expressive techniques, and core functions, while engaging in reciprocal consideration of the cultural contexts—literary views, philosophical thought, and social structures—that shaped them.
Ultimately, by bridging micro-level textual interpretation with macro-level cultural comparison, this dissertation extracts the deep-seated logic and aesthetic orientations embedded in ancient Japanese and Chinese cultures through the prism of the diary. In doing so, it transcends the framework of nationally bounded literary studies, re-examines the essence of literature from a cross-cultural perspective, and provides profound insights into the nature of intercultural understanding and self-expression in the age of globalization.
