With the advent of the metaverse era, emblematic of the new industrial revolution, and the continuous advancement of virtual reality (VR) technology, market demand for virtual tourism utilising Virtual Reality Tourism Applications (VRTA) is increasing year on year.
This rapid pace of development enables the creation of new, diverse and highly immersive virtual tourism experiences. Unlike traditional tourism, it offers an innovative approach that allows users to experience various cultural attractions and natural landscapes without having to travel.
This allowed tourists to more easily experience world-class tourist destinations by using VR equipment and application software, thereby satisfying their desire to travel. Furthermore, VRTA contributed positively to enhancing happiness and quality of life by enabling people with mobility issues to experience travel without the constraints of the real world.
However, during the VRTA usage process, user loyalty is often not sufficiently established when technological acceptance is low or the user experience is unsatisfactory. These factors can undermine the user's intention to continue using VRTA, which has a negative impact on usage rates and long-term development. Consequently, User's Continuing Intention (USCI) has emerged as a key factor in the sustainable development of VRTA. USCI signifies a user's intention to continue using a specific service or technology. It can directly impact long-term satisfaction, loyalty, a company's profitability, and market competitiveness. USCI is not determined by a single factor, but rather by a multidimensional structure in which each influencing factor interacts with the others.
An analysis of domestic and international research literature on VRTA revealed four limitations in studies examining USCI in the context of VRTA. Most existing VRTA research has been exploratory and based on specific theories, with studies typically adopting a single perspective. Comprehensive analyses of user USCI have been rare, as have studies adopting multifaceted approaches. To overcome these limitations, prior studies have identified some factors that influence USCI as a basis for rationalising diverse approaches. However, research analysing the logical and structural relationships between these factors has been almost non-existent. Most existing studies have assumed linear relationships between influencing factors, failing to adequately reflect their complexity and nonlinear interactions. Consequently, this study aimed to collect and analyse USCI-related data during the VRTA usage process of users, in order to derive valid influencing factors and the logical relationships between them, as well as improvement pathways. The objective of the research was to establish a theoretical foundation for the design and development of USCI, with the aim of promoting its balanced and sustainable development within the VRTA field.
Based on the above discussion, this study adopted VRTA as its research subject and proceeded as follows: 'Identification of influencing factors → Empirical verification with users → Analysis of the logical relationships between factors → Investigation of improvement pathways'. Case study methods, literature analysis, surveys and expert evaluation were employed for data collection. During the analysis phase, the following methods were utilised: Structural Equation Modelling (SEM); the Decision Measurement and Evaluation Research Method–Interpretative Structural Model–Multiplicative Classification by Matrix Multiplication (DMATEL–ISM–MICMAC) integrated modelling method; and the Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) method. These methods enabled a systematic analysis of the USCI influencing factors evident during VRTA usage by users, the structural relationships between each influencing factor, and the pathways for enhancing USCI.
First, this study categorised the characteristics of the user experience of VRTA products presented in various forms. Relevant VRTA research literature was then reviewed, and expert evaluation methods were employed to collect and confirm USCI influencing factors from a multidimensional perspective. Based on this, a comprehensive and systematic USCI influencing factor framework, which operates during the user's VRTA utilisation process, was constructed.
Secondly, contextualised experimental surveys were conducted to collect data according to the established influence factor framework. The data were processed using SEM methods. Four major VRTA products were used to collect experimental data for an empirical analysis of the USCI influencing factors for users, and the validity of each influencing factor was verified.
Thirdly, additional data were collected using expert evaluation methods for the influence factors identified through the empirical analysis. The DEMATEL–ISM–MICMAC method was then applied to clarify the logical structure, degree of influence, and importance of the factors.
Finally, a composite construct perspective was adopted and the fsQCA method was employed to derive the core influencing factors and improvement pathways of USCI during VRTA utilisation. The operational characteristics and significance of the derived pathways were analysed in depth.
Based on the above research procedures, the following conclusions were reached.
Firstly, the specific relationship between each influencing factor and USCI has been clearly identified. An empirical analysis confirmed that seven factors —information quality, perceived usefulness, flow, satisfaction, presence, enjoyment and gamification — exert a statistically significant positive influence on USCI. This implies that enhancing users' experiential awareness of these aspects within VRTA can effectively increase their intention to continue using it. Of these factors, satisfaction was found to have the greatest influence on USCI, followed by content quality and flow experience. Conversely, perceived usefulness, presence, enjoyment and gamification were found to have a relatively lower impact. Furthermore, empirical analysis revealed that perceived ease of use, social interaction and the user's attitude towards VR technology did not have a statistically significant influence on USCI. This suggests that, within the current Meta platform's VRTA environment, system operability and the richness of social features are not core determinants of continued usage, nor are personal perceptions of VR technology.
Secondly, the mutual logic and relationships, hierarchical structure, and internal operating mechanisms among the USCI influencing factors that emerge when users utilise VRTA were clearly identified. Based on this, a multi-level hierarchical interpretative structure model was constructed. Information Quality and Gamification emerged as fundamental influencing factors at the sub-level, acting as the starting point and core driving force for the entire influence system. Presence, Enjoyment, Flow, and Perceived Usefulness were identified as intermediate factors, performing a crucial mediating role. The top-level factor, Satisfaction, emerged as the final factor directly influencing USCI. Specifically, a structure was formed where lower-level factors influence top-level factors via intermediate factors, and top-level factors then directly act upon USCI. Arousal and gamification were identified as fundamental driving factors stimulating users' intrinsic motivation, while content quality and gamification design acted as key levers enhancing presence. Presence emerged as a crucial mediating factor, increasing arousal at the affective level, perceived usefulness at the cognitive level, and immersive experience at the behavioural level. Satisfaction, positioned at the apex of the hierarchical structure, directly predicted USCI while also functioning as the convergence point for the entire influence pathway. The formation of satisfaction was facilitated by the interaction between underlying driving factors and intermediate mediating factors.
Thirdly, pathways for enhancing USCI when using VRTA were identified. Analysis based on a composite construct perspective revealed five equivalent pathways that can achieve high USCI. The first of these was the 'functional–affective dual-propulsion pathway', which focused on simultaneously enhancing functional and affective value. The “Gamification Utility Path” saw gamification elements and perceived usefulness play a major role, while the “Emotional Immersion Path” relied on strong immersion experiences and emotional resonance. The “Entertainment Game Path” relied on the direct enjoyment provided by gamification elements as its primary driving force. The 'perceived value pathway' involved users forming behavioural intentions based on their comprehensive perception of the value of VRTA. This pathway demonstrated that the processes of behaviour formation and decision-making when using VRTA are heterogeneous, proving that no single, universal, optimal pathway exists, and that diverse pathways coexist. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that five factors — Perceived Usefulness, Enjoyment, Presence, Satisfaction and Gamification — emerged most frequently as core conditions. Conversely, Information Quality and Presence primarily appeared as auxiliary conditions. This suggests that functional value, positive emotional experience, overall satisfaction and fun elements are the most important and universal driving factors in achieving high levels of USCI.
The innovation of this study is manifested primarily in three ways.
Firstly, in terms of research content, while previous studies have focused primarily on the marketing effects of VRTA, this study centred its analysis on the factors influencing USCI and the ways in which it can be enhanced when users engage with VRTA. Due to the complexity, virtuality and novelty of VRTA, it is important to establish a research framework that encompasses the entire user experience. This is crucial for identifying the multidimensional enhancement pathways of USCI, as well as improving the design and development of VRTA and user loyalty.
Secondly, in terms of methodology, this study broadened the theoretical and practical framework surrounding USCI during VRTA use by introducing a complex configuration perspective combined with a contextualised data collection approach. Unlike previous research, which focused on linear causal analysis, the enhancement pathway framework constructed in this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the core influencing factors and operational mechanisms of USCI. By integrating a systematic sequence of procedures — deriving influencing factors, establishing logical relationships between factors and exploring enhancement pathways — into USCI research, this study overcomes the limitations of unidirectional analysis in prior work, presenting a significant milestone for subsequent research in related fields.
Thirdly, the study's research methodology was enhanced by a multifaceted approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, significantly enhancing explanatory power. The present study employed a dual-pronged approach, incorporating both a qualitative literature review and an expert assessment to analyse the factors influencing USCI during VRTA usage. In addition, a quantitative analysis was conducted via contextualised experimental surveys and SEM. In addition, the DEMATEL–ISM–MICMAC integrated methodology was applied to elucidate the logical relationships, influence levels, and importance among the influencing factors, while fsQCA was employed to derive pathways for enhancing USCI. The integration of diverse qualitative and quantitative research methods proved well-suited to this study's multi-layered and multivariate characteristics, making a significant contribution to enhancing the research's comprehensiveness, explanatory power, and reliability.
