As the advancement of the tourism industry becomes increasingly intertwined with the development of Yunnan’s border regions, this study introduces the concept of “full-sensory tourism” by integrating theories of sensory experience with perspectives from psychology and anthropology. Full-sensory tourism refers to a composite tourism model that integrates visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile experiences, distinguishing itself from conventional sightseeing-oriented tourism. Its core lies in eliciting tourists’ emotional engagement, consolidating memory formation, and fostering co-creation of value through embodied practices, cultural embedding, and technological support.
To examine the tourism environment of Yunnan’s border regions as well as the current development and challenges of full-sensory tourism, this study surveyed local residents and tourists. Through questionnaires, it measured three key dimensions—sensory satisfaction, cultural identity perception, and emotional attachment—while also considering external supporting factors such as policy support, infrastructure quality, workforce capacity, consumer spending power, and ecological risk variables. The objective was to verify the mechanisms through which full-sensory tourism experiences influence tourism-related economic outcomes. The analysis revealed significant cognitive differences between residents and tourists. Residents reported notably higher evaluations than tourists regarding policy support, infrastructure level, workforce capability, and tourism economic effects, with particularly pronounced differences in perceptions of policy support and infrastructure. Meanwhile, although differences existed in sensory satisfaction and emotional attachment, their overall levels remained moderate, and satisfaction with policy and infrastructure was generally low.
These ecological contradictions and perception gaps between residents and tourists highlight issues of benefit coordination within the tourism development structure. Accordingly, this study proposes that optimizing sensory experiences, improving policy support systems, and strengthening ecological management constitute key pathways for enhancing the economic benefits of tourism in Yunnan’s border regions. Taking Wenshan as a representative case that aligns well with the conditions of full-sensory tourism, the analysis identified two major vulnerabilities in its tourism development. First, excessive commercialization tends to induce cultural homogenization, diminishing visitors’ experiential quality, negatively affecting residents’ daily life, and hindering sustainable economic development. Second, festivals and events are concentrated within specific periods, resulting in significant disparities between peak and off-peak tourism seasons and weakening the stability of tourism’s economic contribution.
Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the integration and coordinated development of full-sensory tourism resources, advance the branding and marketization of full-sensory tourism products, and improve mechanisms for benefit sharing, while simultaneously reinforcing ecological resource protection. These measures will help establish exemplary models of integrated tourism development in ethnic minority border regions and provide practical references for rural revitalization and cultural heritage preservation through culture–tourism synergy. This study nevertheless faces certain limitations. The assessments of sensory satisfaction, cultural identity perception, and emotional attachment from both tourists and residents are susceptible to subjective influences, potentially generating discrepancies between survey results and actual conditions. Future research should expand the spatial scope of sampling and extend the investigation period to reduce data bias and derive more objective and precise conclusions.
