Well-being is a widely pursued ideal and a core goal of sustainable social development. Tourism, as a means of enhancing well-being, is regarded as a “happiness industry,” contributing to social welfare. Tea culture tourism offers unique sensory experiences such as viewing tea plantations, tasting tea, and smelling tea aroma, and its restorative tea-garden environment further shows potential for enhancing well-being. This study integrates sensory marketing theory with Attention Restoration Theory and Flow Theory to develop a model examining sensory experience’s effects on well-being in tea culture tourism. Well-being is classified into hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions, and influence pathways are identified from both perspectives.
A mixed-methods approach is adopted. First, a systematic literature review defines and examines the core constructs—sensory experience, restorative environmental perception, flow experience, and well-being—to construct the research model and propose hypotheses. Next, content analysis of online reviews of tea culture tourism sites identifies sensory elements, producing the initial sensory experience items, while other constructs are adapted from established scales. After pilot testing and refinement, the final questionnaire is administered to collect empirical data. Using SPSS and AMOS, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) assess reliability and validity, and structural equation modeling (SEM) tests the proposed model and hypotheses.
The research results are as follows. First, in tea culture tourism, all five sensory experiences significantly enhance hedonic well-being, whereas only visual and haptic experiences positively affect eudaimonic well-being. Second, restorative environmental perception significantly mediates relationships between all five sensory experiences and both types of well-being. Third, flow experience exhibits partially significant mediation: visual, gustatory, and haptic experiences enhance both types of well-being through flow, while olfactory and auditory effects are not significant. Fourth, restorative environmental perception and flow experience form a significant sequential mediation mechanism through which all five sensory experiences indirectly influence both well-being types.
Theoretically, the study starts from sensory experience and incorporates restorative environmental perception and flow experience as mediators to construct a “sensory experience–psychological process–well-being” model, deepening understanding of how sensory experience shapes tourist well-being. Practically, findings inform product development, environmental design, and marketing in tea culture tourism: reinforcing multisensory integration, optimizing restorative features, and enhancing interaction can elevate well-being. However, limitations remain. The sample from western China limits generalizability and omits mediators or moderators like cultural interest. Future research may extend model through cross-regional and multilevel analysis.
