Development of High-Functional Water Treatment Membranes via Surface Functionalization of 3D-Printed Filters
In this study, a next-generation high-functional carbon membrane (3D-W-ACM) was developed by integrating 3D printing technology with a low-temperature Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) process to overcome the material processing limitations and fouling issues of conventional water treatment membranes.
In the first stage, a tubular PLA support with optimized hydraulic flow was fabricated using FDM-based 3D printing. This approach effectively overcame the complex manufacturing steps and shape restrictions associated with traditional ceramic supports, establishing a precise control mechanism for macro-pore structures.
In the second stage, the PECVD process was optimized to grow carbon nanostructures at temperatures below 120 °C, preventing the thermal deformation of the polymer support. This resulted in the uniform formation of vertically aligned carbon whisker layers on the PLA surface. The fabricated 3D-W-ACM exhibited significantly higher specific surface area and adsorption activity compared to conventional planar membranes.
In the third stage, cross-flow filtration experiments were conducted using actual "Red Water" samples collected from aged pipelines. The results showed that 3D-W-ACM achieved a steady-state flux more than 20% higher than that of conventional W-ACM. Notably, it demonstrated superior performance in removing low-molecular-weight natural organic matter (NOM) ranging from 100 to 500 Da. This is attributed to a dual mechanism where the carbon whisker layer physically blocks pore clogging by particulate matter while selectively adsorbing dissolved organic compounds.
Finally, the anti-fouling mechanism of 3D-W-ACM was elucidated through numerical analysis using the Kozeny-Carman equation and the Imasaka model. The modeling results demonstrated that carbon whiskers significantly reduce hydraulic resistance by increasing the porosity of the cake layer formed on the membrane surface. A high correlation between experimental data and model predictions was confirmed.
In conclusion, the 3D printing-based low-temperature carbon membrane fabrication technology proposed in this study is expected to serve as an innovative platform for energy-efficient advanced water purification and customized water treatment systems.
