This study aims to explore the aspects of abstraction that emerge in the process through which remembered images of nature are transformed into painterly expression. The starting point of this research originates from a remark made by the artist’s mother while viewing the artist’s paintings of natural imagery. Her response—that the simple images of nature evoked memories of the past and created a sensation of entering the painted space—formed the conceptual foundation of this study. This experience suggests that natural imagery can function not merely as an object of representation, but as a psychological space in which memory and emotion are layered.
The study focuses on the idea that remembered natural images are not fixed representations viewed from a single perspective, but are continuously reconfigured through layers of time and personal emotional involvement. Rather than depicting nature as a direct reproduction of an actual landscape, human perception transforms natural imagery through processes of memory formation, disappearance, and persistence. Within this process, natural images are internalized and translated into abstract visual language. This research analyzes how such transformations of memory are visualized within the pictorial surface.
In particular, remembered natural imagery maintains a certain degree of resemblance to actual landscapes while simultaneously expanding into internalized landscapes shaped by past experiences and emotions. These paintings reflect the artist’s childhood memories and, at the same time, invite viewers to recall their own memories and personal recollections. Through this approach, the study seeks to move beyond fragmentary representation and to create abstract paintings that allow for diverse and open interpretations.
By examining the transformation of natural imagery into abstract expression through the interaction of memory, time, and emotion, this study highlights the significance of abstract painting as a visual articulation of the inner world and suggests its potential for formal and conceptual expansion.
