In the midst of increasingly busy daily routines, children’s oral health—an area that requires meticulous attention—exhibits both universality and complexity. According to the results of China’s Fourth National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey, the prevalence of deciduous dental caries among domestic five-year-old children has already exceeded 70%. The onset occurs early, the impact is extensive, and parental attention remains insufficient. Such high rates of oral health problems not only affect children’s growth and articulation, but may also exert negative influences on physiological development, mental well-being, and social interactions. Clinical and behavioral studies indicate that the formation of dental caries is closely related not only to dietary habits and genetic factors, but also to the regularity of children’s toothbrushing behavior and the establishment of oral care habits. However, due to a lack of intrinsic motivation, insufficient ability scaffolding, and inadequate external supervision and feedback during early developmental stages, children face significant challenges in establishing and maintaining proper oral hygiene behaviors. Traditional children’s toothbrushes focus primarily on cleaning functions and lack elements of fun and interactivity, making it difficult to promote interest in toothbrushing or to support long-term habit formation through behavioral guidance. Therefore, analyzing children’s behavioral mechanisms and extracting design methods and elements that integrate playful interaction is a highly valuable direction for development, offering meaningful implications for both future generations’ health and broader societal well-being. In particular, combining emotional design with behavior-inducing strategies in powered toothbrush design is expected to offer an effective approach for positively guiding children’s real-life brushing behaviors.
This study aims to propose an electric toothbrush product design strategy that promotes positive changes in children’s brushing habits by integrating the concepts of Emotional Design and Behavior Induction. The research focuses on children aged three to eight, covering preschoolers and lower-grade primary school students. By synthesizing emotional behavior mechanisms with behavior-persuasion strategies, the study emphasizes that the formation of voluntary participation and long-term oral health habits should originate within the home environment. The research first reviews existing literature to systematically analyze children’s oral health status, issues in brushing behavior, and product development trends. It then establishes a theoretical framework that integrates the Fogg Behavior Model (FBM), Persuasive Design Theory, Emotional Design Theory, and child psychology. The FBM posits that behavior occurs through an interaction of motivation, ability, and triggers, providing foundational logic for analyzing children’s brushing behavior and formulating design strategies. Emotional Design highlights instinctive, behavioral, and reflective usability, which is particularly relevant for developing child-oriented products. Furthermore, the study analyzes cognitive, emotional, and social development characteristics across age groups from a child psychology perspective to justify product functions and interaction strategies.
Methodologically, the study adopts an integrated “observation–survey–modeling–design” approach. Field observations and parent interviews identified key issues in children’s brushing behavior, including insufficient brushing time, non-standard movements, distractibility, and inconsistent parental supervision. Based on the three elements of the FBM, a questionnaire containing 18 core items was developed, addressing motivational factors (e.g., fun elements, reward systems), ability-related factors (e.g., ergonomics, safety), and trigger factors (e.g., notifications, feedback, supervision mechanisms). Among 315 distributed surveys, 309 valid responses were collected, yielding a valid response rate of 98%.
In the data analysis stage, reliability and validity tests were conducted. Cronbach’s α for the overall scale exceeded 0.85, and all subscales surpassed 0.7, indicating strong internal consistency. The KMO value of 0.872 and the statistically significant Bartlett’s test (p < 0.001) confirmed suitability for factor analysis. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) extracted four major factors—“interest-based motivation,” “ability support,” “trigger feedback,” and “parental supervision”—with total variance explained exceeding 70%. These factors aligned with findings from observations and interviews, confirming the multidimensional nature of children’s brushing behavior requirements. Subsequently, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to determine the importance of each factor. The target layer focused on “toothbrush design elements for children,” while the criteria layer included motivation, ability, triggers, and supervision. Sub-criteria encompassed reward systems, cartoon storytelling, safety materials, ergonomics, feedback notifications, movement correction, and data monitoring.
The results indicate that “ability support” serves as the foundational element, while “motivational interest” functions as the key driver. “Trigger feedback” acts as an auxiliary mechanism for habit formation, and “parental supervision” provides supplementary support in long-term educational processes. These findings demonstrate the complementary relationship between emotional design elements and behavior-inducing strategies.
In the design phase, three conceptual design proposals were developed based on behavioral and needs analysis. The proposals addressed three different perspectives: enhancement of fun, optimization of interactive feedback, and expansion of parental monitoring functions. A panel of nine multidisciplinary experts evaluated the three proposals using a combined weighted scoring method and AHP across five dimensions: interest, guidance, emotional value, safety, and sustainability. While each design had its strengths in functionality and form, the proposal emphasizing fun and interactivity achieved the highest overall score and was selected as the final direction for integrated design development.
The finalized product design strategy is summarized as follows: “safety as the foundation, fun as the driving force, feedback as the auxiliary mechanism, and supervision as complementary support.” The design consists of four functional modules.
First, the safety module employs food-grade silicone, eco-friendly ABS plastic, ergonomic grips suited to children’s hand development, and flexible bristle structures.
Second, the fun-interaction module transforms the monotonous brushing process into an engaging game experience through point rewards, character unlocking, and storytelling.
Third, the feedback mechanism module integrates a two-minute timer, voice and light guidance, and movement correction to provide immediate feedback.
Fourth, the parental supervision module visualizes brushing data through a mobile app, enabling parents to monitor and encourage their children’s habits and to create a participatory learning environment. The visual design adopts animal-character aesthetics, rounded silhouettes, and warm color tones such as orange and yellow to enhance emotional comfort and visual affinity.
Through design experimentation, the study proposes a prototype of an interactive and playful children's toothbrush, presenting functional decomposition diagrams, orthographic projections, perspective sketches, and app interface drafts. The proposed design meets safety and functional requirements while enhancing children’s brushing motivation and positive emotional engagement through fun and interaction. Compared with existing products, the design demonstrates superior performance in motivation, behavioral correction, and supervisory feedback, confirming its potential to support systematic habit formation.
