This study aims to empirically examine the effects of the hotel Lobbyscape on customers’ behavioral intentions, with a focus on the mediating role of PAD (Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance) emotions. As the hotel industry evolves into an experience economy, the emotional and experiential value derived from physical environments has become a crucial competitive factor. Grounded in Bitner’s (1992) Lobbyscape theory and Mehrabian and Russell’s (1974) Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, this research investigates how the multidimensional Lobbyscape of a hotel lobby (stimulus) influences behavioral intentions (response) through the mediation of emotional states (organism).

The Lobbyscape was conceptualized into three dimensions: ambient conditions, visual & aesthetic design, and functionality. Data were collected from 219 Chinese adults with hotel experience and analyzed using SPSS and PROCESS Macro (Model 4, bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples).

The results revealed that: (1) all three Lobbyscape dimensions had a significant positive direct effect on behavioral intention, with functionality (β = .348) being the strongest predictor; (2) the Lobbyscape significantly and positively influenced PAD emotions; (3) PAD emotions significantly affected behavioral intention; and (4) PAD emotions partially mediated the relationship between the Lobbyscape and behavioral intention, confirming the existence of both direct and emotion-mediated indirect pathways.

These findings underscore that the hotel lobby functions as a strategic experiential stage, where its design not only directly shapes customer decisions but also indirectly enhances loyalty by evoking positive emotional responses. The strong effect of functionality suggests that practical efficiency may be as critical as aesthetic appeal in fostering customer loyalty in hospitality settings.
