Railway crossings in Mongolia are among the most critical safety challenges in the national transportation system, particularly in urban areas like Ulaanbaatar, where over 60% of all crossings are located. Despite their importance, many crossings remain poorly equipped, with outdated passive systems such as signs and bells instead of active barriers and modern warning technologies. This thesis evaluates the safety performance of railway crossings across Mongolia using a mixed-method approach, including accident data analysis, public surveys, regulatory review, and traffic simulations.
