The Effects of a Peace Sensitivity Group Counseling Program on Adolescents’ Self-Esteem, Respect for Others, and the Quality of Peer Relationships Park, Sea Rom Department of Christian Counseling Honam Theological University & Seminary The purpose of this study was to empirically verify the effects of a peace sensitivity group counseling program on adolescents’ self-esteem, respect for others, and the quality of peer relationships. In recent years, adolescent mental health problems have emerged as serious social issues worldwide, including in Korea, where rates of adolescent suicide and symptoms of depression and anxiety continue to increase. These difficulties are closely related not only to individual psychological problems but also to structural and relational factors such as relational disconnection, competition-oriented school cultures, and the normalization of non-face-to-face communication. Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which identity formation and interpersonal relationship development occur simultaneously, and the quality of peer relationships plays a key role in emotional well-being and social adjustment. Nevertheless, existing counseling and educational interventions for adolescents have tended to address self-esteem, empathy, and peer relationships separately, demonstrating limitations in fostering integrated relational competencies. Based on this problem awareness, the present study focused on the concept of peace sensitivity. Peace sensitivity refers to emotional, cognitive, and relational capacities that sensitively recognize non-peaceful situations within oneself, others, and interpersonal relationships and attempt to transform them in peaceful ways. Although previous studies have discussed peace sensitivity mainly within educational contexts, research conceptualizing it as a core internal variable within counseling psychology and empirically verifying it through group counseling programs remains limited. To address this research gap, the present study redefined peace sensitivity as a counseling-related internal variable and operationalized it into three components: self-esteem, respect for others, and quality of peer relationships. Emphasizing that peace sensitivity is internalized through actual relational experiences rather than through cognitive understanding alone, group counseling was selected as the core intervention method. Accordingly, a peace sensitivity group counseling program for adolescents was developed, and an experimental research design was applied to verify its effects. The participants consisted of female high school students divided into an experimental group and a control group. The program was implemented over a predetermined number of sessions for the experimental group, while no intervention was provided to the control group. Measurement instruments included scales assessing self-esteem, respect for others, and quality of peer relationships, and changes in each variable were examined through pre- and post-tests. The results indicated that the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in respect for others (F = 10.05, p < .01) and quality of peer relationships (F = 5.60, p < .05) compared to the control group. Significant changes were also observed in mutual respect (F = 10.19, p < .01) and peer intimacy (F = 9.58, p < .01). Although self-esteem (F = 2.26, p > .05) did not show a statistically significant difference between groups, the experimental group demonstrated a non-significant upward trend in post-test mean scores. These findings suggest that the program effectively enhanced adolescents’ respect for others and promoted positive peer interactions grounded in trust and support. The significance of this study lies in reconstructing peace sensitivity as a counseling-related internal variable and empirically verifying its effects through a group counseling program. Furthermore, by integrating self-esteem, respect for others, and quality of peer relationships within a unified construct, this study offers a practical intervention framework for supporting adolescents’ relational recovery and emotional stability in school and community counseling settings. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of peace sensitivity group counseling as an alternative approach to adolescents’ psychological and emotional crises, and serves as foundational data for future research and practice in adolescent counseling and school-based relationship recovery programs.
