St. John of the Cross uses the symbol of the 'Dark Night' to describe the soul's spiritual journey toward complete union with God. This journey is based on the three traditional stages of Christian mysticism—purgation, illumination, and union—and includes both the soul's active effort and God's passive work.
The Dark Night of the Senses, intended for beginners, is a purification of the senses that severs all desires and attachments to the created world. As the soul navigates this "night," it frees itself from external pleasures and self-centeredness, learns true humility in imitation of Christ, and prepares for contemplative prayer.
The second stage, the Dark Night of the Spirit, is more severe than the first. Its purpose is to eradicate all imperfect habits and defects remaining in the soul's intellect, memory, and will. This night is also achieved through the soul's active effort and the complete emptying wrought by God's guiding work of contemplation. Through this rigorous purification, the soul endures self-abasement and suffering, but it ultimately empties itself of all distorted knowledge and desires for God. In the end, the soul is satisfied with God alone, reaching a pure union of love with Him.
St. John of the Cross's mystical thought shows that human perfection is a spiritual journey. It requires the soul to completely empty itself of all attachment to creation and self-centered love. True union is achieved through the virtues of faith, hope, and love, culminating in a loving bond with a transcendent God. This provides an important message to modern Christianity, which often emphasizes external growth and sensory experiences, by urging an inner reflection and a maturation of faith through hardship.
