This study aims to enhance understanding of how the concepts of Viktor Frankl's logotherapy are applied in real-life contexts by analyzing the narrative of a literary character as a case study through the application of logotherapy. To this end, the novel "Golden Scales," which well reflects contemporary society, was selected to analyze the narrative of the protagonist 'Dongmyeong' in his search for his unique meaning of life through logotherapy theory.
The analysis reveals that in his early narrative, Dongmyeong, the protagonist of this work, accepts externally imposed conditions entirely as the meaning of his life due to his unfortunate circumstances. This misguided approach to seeking meaning causes him to perceive the death of his adoptive father as an event that collapses the very meaning of his existence. Consequently, Dongmyeong appears to exhibit typical aspects of noogenic neurosis in a state of existential vacuum.
Nevertheless, the subsequent narrative shows that Dongmyeong's will to meaning has not completely disappeared. He reconstructs the meaning of his life through the people he meets in Chuncheon, where he fled to avoid police suspicion, particularly through an old man and Munjae. Dongmyeong's meaning of life appears to be formed centered on the process of finding an answer to Munjae's crucial question. In this process, all three value structures of logotherapy—creative values, experiential values, and attitudinal values—are revealed, with experiential values appearing to be predominantly manifested.
Dongmyeong answers Munjae's question about why humans live with "happiness." From a logotherapeutic perspective, this relates to reaching the value of true love that transcends the self and is directed toward others. Therefore, "happiness" in this sense can be considered a keyword related to the ultimate meaning of life that Frankl emphasizes.
In conclusion, Dongmyeong's pursuit of life's meaning is not different from our own in contemporary society. However, the process is by no means easy. Just as the old man and Munjae served as helpers to Dongmyeong, people like Dongmyeong in contemporary society also need those who can help them find meaning in life. Logotherapy can be an important counseling approach for such people.
