Coeducation has become a defining feature of modern education systems, closely associated with the expansion of democracy, gender equality, and universal schooling. In Korea, however, the formation and development of coeducation were neither linear nor ideologically consistent. This study examines how coeducation was introduced, implemented, and socially perceived during the Japanese colonial period (1910–1945), with particular attention to the formative decades between the 1920s and 1945. By analyzing contemporary newspaper articles as primary sources, this research explores public discourse, social attitudes, and policy-related debates surrounding coeducation, situating them within broader processes of modernization, colonial governance, and changing gender norms.

The findings demonstrate that coeducation in colonial Korea functioned not as a fully realized egalitarian ideal but as a conditional and pragmatic system shaped by administrative efficiency, resource constraints, and prevailing gender ideologies. While coeducation was partially implemented in public elementary schools—often through shared school spaces with gender-segregated classes or, in limited cases, mixed-gender classrooms—it remained largely absent from secondary and higher education. Newspaper discourse reveals competing interpretations of coeducation: progressive voices framed it as a symbol of civilization, gender equality, and educational rationality, whereas conservative perspectives emphasized moral anxiety, developmental differences, and the perceived inappropriateness of mixed education. Although female educational opportunities expanded quantitatively during this period, coeducation was constrained by colonial policies that lacked an explicit commitment to gender equality and became increasingly restricted under the wartime regime after 1937.

This study argues that the selective and hierarchical application of coeducation during the colonial period significantly influenced post-liberation educational structures in Korea. The continuation of coeducation at the elementary level alongside gender-segregated secondary education after 1945 can be traced to institutional patterns and social perceptions already established under colonial rule. Despite its limitations, colonial-era coeducation opened important institutional possibilities by allowing male and female students to share educational spaces and curricula for the first time. As such, coeducation during this period should be understood not merely as an incomplete reform but as a critical historical foundation for the later development of educational equality and gender discourse in modern Korean society.
