This qualitative study investigates the social integration experiences of Russian female students in South Korea through the dimensions of cross-cultural friendship with local students and structural Host-Visitor dynamic. Based on in-depth interviews with nine participants (five internationally experienced Korean students who provide contextual insight and four Russian female students), it explores how cultural conceptions Russian female students’ pursuit of emotionally deep bonds centered around dusha (soul) encounters a Host environment where close friendship is often mediated by ascribed relational networks (yeongo). These barriers manifest in mismatched expectations regarding reciprocity, communication styles, and the viability of cross-gender friendships. The study further reveals that formal institutional initiatives, such as university buddy programs, often fail because they overlook these cultural and structural codes, while successful integration can be facilitated by “bridge builder” individuals. This thesis argues that understanding social integration of Russian students requires analyzing how cultural expectations intersect with the structural dynamics of local-international student relationships.
