The global circulation of Korean television dramas (K-dramas) has been theorized to shape international audiences' perceptions of South Korean society, gender relations, and romantic norms. While scholars such as Jung (2011) and Elfving-Hwang (2011) have examined the rise of soft masculinity and the global appeal of emotionally expressive male protagonists, much of the existing research examines media representation and audience reception as separate domains. Moreover, such studies have largely focused on viewers in their home countries, offering limited insight into what occurs when media-formed expectations encounter the lived realities of relocation to South Korea. At the same time, cross-cultural adaptation research has rarely examined how dramatized portrayals may foster unrealistic expectations that complicate early adjustment. Although quantitative surveys demonstrate correlations between media consumption and attitudes, they provide limited understanding of how expectations form affectively or are negotiated through lived experience. This study addresses these gaps by tracing the full trajectory from media encoding to audience decoding and subsequent real-world encounters of foreign women living in South Korea.

Employing a multi-method qualitative design, this study integrates content analysis of seven participant-identified dramas produced between 2007 and 2025 with semi-structured interviews conducted with ten foreign women residing in South Korea. Guided by an encoding/decoding framework, the analysis examines the relationship between on-screen constructions of masculine ideals, audience interpretations, and everyday romantic experiences after relocation.

Content analysis reveals that the analyzed K-dramas consistently portray a hybrid model of masculinity that combines emotional gentleness with traditional expectations of responsibility, competence, and protective authority. Interview data indicate that participants formed expectations through intertwined cognitive and affective processes, with parasocial attachments creating affective anticipation that often persisted despite participants’ awareness of the dramas’ idealized nature. Participants reported expectation–reality gaps across domains including physical appearance, communication style, emotional expression, and dating behavior. Adaptation processes involved gradual expectation revision, with participants identifying language proficiency, friendships with South Korean women, and longer residence duration as facilitating factors.

The findings contribute to cultivation theory by suggesting that affectively oriented cultivation effects may persist despite viewers’ cognitive recognition that dramas are fictional. The study extends parasocial relationship theory by demonstrating how parasocial attachments can function as comparison frameworks during early dating experiences, and challenges the assumptions within cross-cultural adaptation theory that host-culture media exposure uniformly facilitates adjustment. The findings have implications for media literacy initiatives, cross-cultural counseling practices, and theoretical understandings of how affectively charged media shapes expectations and intimate experiences in transnational contexts.
