This paper aims to elucidate the nature of Paul's Damascus Road Experience (DRE) and to clarify its profound theological and historical significance for the formation of Paul's apostleship and the identity of early Christianity. Paul’s dual description of this event using terms of external christophany(‘ὤφθη’, 1 Cor 9:1; 15:8) and internal revelation (‘ἐν ἐμοί’, Gal 1:16) has sparked contemporary scholarly debate regarding whether Paul’s experience was an objective resurrection appearance or an internal vision. This study is premised on the understanding that a clear interpretation of the DRE is foundational to comprehending Paul's apostleship, his resurrection theology, and apostolic ecclesiology.
The research methodology employs methodological neutrality regarding the possibility of supernatural events, genre analysis of the Book of Acts, cross-verification of independent testimonies in Paul’s epistles and Acts, analysis of the convergences and discontinuities between the DRE and Jewish literature/calling paradigms, and the use of Abduction (Argument to the Best Explanation, ABE) to assess the event’s historicity.
The findings indicate that while Jewish literature (2 Maccabees 3, Joseph and Aseneth) and the Old Testament calling traditions share similar patterns—such as light, prostration, naming, and commission—the DRE exhibits distinct discontinuities. Specifically, the DRE’s defining features are: the subject of the christophany is the resurrected Jesus; its purpose is apostolic sending (missio) directed toward Gentile mission; and it is presented within a framework of public authentication. Compared to OT prophetic calling narratives, the DRE, while inheriting the structure of “light, voice, prostration, naming, and commission,” includes unique elements: direct Christological manifestation, a command for Gentile mission, the granting of a commission in a public setting, and direct apostolic commissioning by the Risen Lord. This distinctiveness demonstrates that the DRE cannot be adequately explained merely as a Jewish tradition or a typical prophetic calling narrative. It is most persuasively argued that Paul experienced something more explanatory than what is found in Jewish literature and prophetic calling narratives.
Analysis of the Book of Acts shows that Luke's three accounts of the DRE (Acts 9, 22, 26) are rhetorical arrangements tailored to the audience and context, but this does not negate their historicity. Luke’s prologue to the Gospel indicates his intent to write according to the standards of ancient historiography (investigation, order, and accuracy), and Acts is written as a form of ancient apologetic historiography, conveying theological intent without sacrificing historicity. Specifically, the DRE accounts are placed within the genre of ancient historical speeches twice, demonstrating Luke's dual objective of presenting both historicity and theology. Furthermore, Luke consistently uses visual language (εἶδον/ὤφθη) for the DRE, distinguishing it from other narratives where explicit vision terminology (ὅραμα/ἔκστασις) is used (e.g., Peter's vision, Macedonian call). The account also documents a public ratification process. Luke treats the DRE as a historical fact, differentiates it from mere visions, and records it as a special experience publicly acknowledged by the Church.
The Pauline Epistles point in the same direction. The phrase “ἐν ἐμοί” in Galatians 1:16 can be understood not merely as an internal experience ('in me') but also in a dative sense ('to me'), which does not conflict with the external Specifically, the DRE’s defining features are: the subject of the christophany is the resurrected Jesus; statement found in Acts and 1 Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 9:1 is not a context for debating the veracity of the resurrection appearance, but rather addresses apostolic rights, suggesting that the fact of Paul's resurrection sight was undisputed within the Church at that time. Finally, 1 Corinthians 15, the culmination of Paul’s resurrection theology, shares similarities with other Jewish literature (2 Maccabees, 1 Enoch) but reveals unique features: the witnessing of the resurrection, the resurrection as a firstfruits/beginning, and the clear articulation of bodily resurrection as new creation. These unique elements are most convincingly explained under the assumption that Paul actually witnessed the resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus.
In conclusion, this study, by synthesizing various lines of evidence from historical sources concerning the DRE, including commonalities, discontinuities, and independent testimonies, argues that the Damascus Road Experience was not merely a vision or internal experience, but a real and historical resurrection appearance. This finding carries essential theological and ecclesiological implications for understanding the apostolicity of the Church and the historicity of the Gospel.
