Nail design is a field that creates the aesthetic value of nails by utilizing various design elements such as color, form, and texture. Among these elements, form is a core morphological component that is closely related to the structural characteristics of the hand. The length, width, and curvature of nails interact with the proportions of the hand to shape visual impressions, and preferences vary according to individual characteristics and lifestyle. Moreover, the visual completeness of nail design is formed not only by nail shape itself but also by its harmony with the structural proportions of the hand and fingers, including length, width, and circumference. Consequently, the interaction between hand shape and nail shape plays a crucial role in determining the visual characteristics of nail design.
The purpose of this study was to classify adult female hand shapes based on data-driven analysis and to empirically examine differences in visual impressions according to combinations of standardized hand types and nail shapes, thereby providing foundational data applicable to nail design development. For this purpose, factor analysis and cluster analysis were conducted using hand length, width, and circumference measurements derived from the 8th Size Korea Anthropometric Survey. Structural factors of adult female hand shapes were extracted and classified into four distinct hand types. In addition, percentile values (P10, P50, and P90) were used to visualize age-related differences in hand structure.
Based on the median values (P50), standard hand types were categorized into Group A (ages 20–30) and Group B (ages 40–50) considering visual characteristics. Visual stimuli were produced by applying three nail shapes (round, square, and stiletto) to the standard hand types of each group using an AI-based image generation program. Adobe Firefly was employed to minimize extraneous variables such as lighting conditions, skin tone, and shooting angles that commonly arise in photo-based stimulus production, allowing for the generation of consistent and controlled visual stimuli. Twenty-four hand measurement values corresponding to the median percentile were entered into prompts to quantitatively reflect proportional hand structures, resulting in six standardized visual stimuli. These stimuli were evaluated online by 100 experts in fashion, beauty, and design fields using the semantic differential method, assessing five factors—formative quality, aesthetic appeal, image sensibility, age appropriateness, and overall evaluation—between October 24 and November 1, 2025.
The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, the structural form of the hand was identified as a multidimensional structure composed of seven factors, confirming the presence of independent morphological characteristics across different regions, including finger joint circumference and width, finger length, overall hand length, and the distal structures of the thumb and little finger. Second, cluster analysis using structural factor scores classified hand shapes into four types: a “slender and long type,” a “long type,” a “short type,” and a “thick-jointed type,” each exhibiting distinct structural features. Third, percentile analysis by age group revealed no significant differences in hand length, whereas hand width and circumference showed clear expansion with increasing age. Notably, individuals in their 40s and 50s exhibited increased finger joint circumference and width, while those in their 20s and 30s demonstrated relatively slender and elongated hand structures.
Fourth, the main effect of nail shape was statistically significant across all evaluation factors (p < .001), confirming nail shape as a decisive factor in visual impression formation. The stiletto shape received the highest evaluations in formative quality, aesthetic appeal, and image sensibility, whereas the round and square shapes were rated higher in age appropriateness and overall evaluation. Fifth, interaction effects between nail shape and age group were identified, indicating that the same nail shape may be perceived differently depending on age-related hand structure and contextual image interpretation.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that combinations of hand structure and nail shape significantly influence the visual image of nail design. A data-driven approach to hand shape classification enhances the precision and personalization of nail design and suggests practical applicability in customer-tailored nail design proposals, age-specific design strategies, and the development of AI-based simulation models in professional practice.
