Digital transformation has significantly changed the modern consumer environment, and information consumption in the digital space has enabled multidimensional interactive communication. Amid these changes, a new evaluation of the power dynamics between information producers and consumers has become necessary, and the beauty industry isalsobeing directlyinfluenced bythistransformation.
Modern beauty consumers tend to check hairstyles and salon information uploaded on SNS before visiting the salon, showing a behavioral shift in their consumption process. Since beauty services are experience-based products whose quality can only be assessed after use, potential customers actively rely on online reviews to reduce information asymmetry and uncertainty. Therefore, SNS images and platform reviews function not only as sources of information but also as spaces for sharing experiences, and their influence continues to expand, especially in the consumption of experiential services such as beauty treatments.
This study aims to examine the effects of SNS images and platform reviews on consumers’ satisfaction with beauty service experiences and to empirically verify the mediating effect of the need for self-expression, thereby identifying psychological mediating factors that have been overlooked in previous research. Furthermore, the practical purpose of this study is to propose effective marketing strategies and consumer experience management plans for the beauty and digital serviceindustries.
For the empirical analysis, data were collected from 505 valid questionnaires targeting customers who use SNS and online reservation platforms. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 through frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and mediation effect testing.
Theresults and conclusions of thisstudyareas follows:
First, regarding demographic characteristics, the majority of respondents were female, in their 20s, unmarried, university students or graduates, working in office jobs, and earning a monthly income between 2and3 million KRW.
Second, factor analysis revealed that SNS image exposure consisted of two factors—style reflection and trend exploration. Platform reviews were divided into trust formation through reviews and review search behavior. Beauty salon experience satisfaction was represented by service experience satisfaction, while the need for self-expression was extractedasself-expressionthrough style.
Third, the correlation analysis showed that SNS image exposure, platformreviews, beautysalonexperiencesatisfaction, and theneedfor self -expressionwereallsignificantly correlatedwithone another.
Fourth, higher tendencies toward utilization behavior and trend exploration were found to have a positive (+) effect on beauty salon experience satisfaction, as well as on the need for self-expression. Likewise, higher tendencies toward trust formation through reviews and selection behavior were found to have a positive (+) effect on both beauty salon experience satisfaction and the need for self-expression.
Fifth, mediation analysis revealed that the effect of utilization behavior on service experience satisfaction decreased when mediated by self-expression through style, indicating a partial mediating effect. Similarly, the influence of trend exploration on service experience satisfaction decreased through mediation by self -expression, suggesting a partial mediating role. In addition, the effects of trust formation through reviews and selection behavior on service experience satisfaction also decreased when mediated by self-expression, confirmingthat self-expression plays apartialmediating role.
Theconclusionsdrawn fromthesefindingsareas follows:
First, the more consumers apply images encountered on SNS to their real-life beauty experiences, the higher their satisfaction with salon services. Consumers who are more adept at recognizing and selecting styles suitable for themselves tend to experience greater satisfaction. In this process, as consumers try styles they have seen on SNS and discover what suits them best, their desire for self-expressionthroughbeautytreatmentsbecomes stronger.
Second, a higher level of trust in platform reviews and more active utilization of such reviews significantly increase satisfaction with beauty services. The more consumers compare and analyze reviews to make decisions that suit their preferences, the higher their satisfaction becomes. This process of trusting and carefully evaluating platform reviews enhances the desire for self-expression, which in turn positivelyaffectssatisfactionwithbeautyserviceexperiences.
Third, actively applying images seen on SNS to actual beauty treatments increases satisfaction with services and further enhances fulfillment when expressing one’s individuality. In other words, consumers gain satisfaction by assessing and applying styles that suit them based on SNS images, while simultaneously satisfying their self-expression needs. When consumers trust and utilize review information actively, satisfaction with service experiences rises, and comparing various reviews to select the most suitable style further amplifies satisfaction. Moreover, as consumers express their individuality through these choices, their desire for self-expression is reinforced, ultimately improving the quality of their consumption experience and contributing positively to long-term revisit intentions
and loyalty.
The suggestions for future research based on this study are as follows:
First, this study highlights that beauty services go beyond providing external changes—they play a social and psychological role in shaping personal identity and self-expression. Beauty salons should establish consultation, recommendation, and review-sharing systems that effectively utilize SNS images and reviews, enabling consumers to actively express themselves. Such strategies can foster long-term revisit intentionsandcustomerloyalty.
Second, the results of this study can be applied not only to the beauty industry but also to companies developing digital marketing strategies. By understanding how consumers interpret SNS images and reviews and how these factors connect to satisfaction, businesses can designmoreeffective marketing messages and contentstrategies.
Third, future studies should strengthen reliability and validity by refining measurement items through preliminary reviews and pilot surveys, ensuring sufficient items represent each factor. Moreover, future research should supplement conceptual meanings that may have been missed due to item deletion and establish factor names and conceptual structureswithgreaterprecision.
